About the Author

Hartmut Elsenhans is a German political scientist and Emeritus Professor of International Relations at the University of Leipzig. He was also affiliated with the Universit� de Montr�al; Jawaharlal Nehru University, India; Quaid-e-Azam University, Islamabad; Columbia University and University of California, Berkeley.

He studied political science, history and sociology at the University of T�bingen and the Free University of Berlin (FU Berlin). He earned his doctoral degree in 1973 with a study on the decolonisation of Algeria in the Algerian War (1954–1962). In 1976, he gained habilitation at FU Berlin.

His current research includes capitalism and social movements, structure of the international system, rise and demise of the capitalist world system, political economy of European integration and development politics and economics. Throughout his career, Elsenhans expanded his work on the book’s topic, publishing a total of five volumes on the subject.�

In the late 1970s, he had short stints as a lecturer at the University of Montreal and the University of Frankfurt before settling down for his first professorship (of International Relations) at the University of Marburg, followed shortly by a long-term professorship at Konstanz University. His focus there was on the analysis of underdevelopment, national and social emancipator movements and public administration in developing countries.

Elsenhans took the opportunity to go to Leipzig after German unification, to help build the department of international relations at the university there. He taught there until 2007, when he retired. He was given honorary membership of the students association of the faculty of political science at the University of Leipzig. Elsenhans currently still resides, lectures and researches in Leipzig.�

The book had a good concept

It is a very good book, easy to understand, the normal mathematic basics are all you need to understand the theory of this book.

He begins with the Solow growth model. It is a static model and can't explain growth over time and the differences between countries in output per person. From that point of view he turns to the Ramsey model. The overlapping generation model is a special case of the Ramsey model. Diamond developed a good model for dynamic analyses. He uses the overlapping generation model for wealth aspects. All models can't describe growth within the economy. It has no productive factor produced in a growth model, like the ak-model. The endogenous growth model deals with it and discuses growth from different point of views. He concentrates on a special model of knowledge. Human capital is introduced later in the Solow model. Knowledge is symbolized in the R&D sector. The Romer model is based on it. The company sells the knowledge via a patent to the market and the rest of the economy behaves competitive. Finally the endogenous growth model is tested. The difference between countries in their output per person comes next. He uses the Solow growth model with human capital. Most of the differences come from other factors. Social infrastructure is a way out and introduces several aspects especially lobbying, tax benefit, rent seeking and geographical factors. The real business cycle based on the Ramsey model. The fluctuations are modeled from the balanced growth path. Two disturbances are modeled, technology and government purchases. Money has no influence in the real business cycle model. It is modeled in the rigidity chapter. Here you have the new Keynesian model with modern fluctuations and rigidities on prices wages and incomplete competition. The IS shock is introduced and how money influences the prices and output. It includes the Phillips curve, menu costs and the Lucas model. The static rigidity model is combined with the real business cycle model. The dynamic stochastic equilibrium model tries to form a time dependent model. It is a Walrasian model with effect of monetary shocks and shows the influence of rigidities to prices and output. In this model the prices are fixed before or during different periods. The result is a modified Phillips curve, the new Keynesian model and a microeconomic based foundation.

Consumption and Investments are the inputs in the growth model and they are very important to fluctuations. The consumption chapter is based on the permanent income hypothesis. The investment chapter is based on Tobin's q and it is stressed against interest fluctuations and tax policy. The financial contract is characterized by asymmetric information. The investor and financier are presented by an equation and the optimal solution is represented.
The labor market is a non Walrasian market, like it is explained in the real business cycle model. The departure from the equilibrium is described with the
efficiency wage. The labor market is a heterogeneous market and there are searching and matching problems. The contract model explains the rigidities of wage contracts.
The last two chapters are a bout macroeconomic policy. The monetary policy is about the right measure to fix the inflation rate to a low level and find an optimal policy for setting the inflation target. The last chapter includes the government in the growth model and debt models are described.

This is a really useful advanced-intermediate macro text, but it contains almost nothing about the open economy. Maybe the United States can be treated as a closed economy as a first approximation, but most others can't. It would be nice to see more attention paid to these issues in future editions.

Excellent graduate textbook

This is an excellent textbook in macroeconomics! It combines rigorous theory, very clear intuition and great empirical applications (this favorably contrasts with textbooks doing data-free macroeconomics and really helps to understand questions and issues that macroeconomists try to address). The text also covers a broad range of topics ranging from growth to business cycles to optimal policy. Problems are very helpful to master the material. The text is also unusually balanced for a macroeconomic textbook in the sense that various theories are given fair treatment and assessment. Highly recommend for graduate students!

Insightful and Hillarious

I would defy anyone who has ever lived in the UK, or anywhere else that is often cold, wet and rainy, not to say that they have had a secret yearning to change their life by heading for a life abroad. Every years, millions of us make the cattle class journey to European resorts and we watch the Brit's who have made it, those who live permanently in our holiday destinations, with envy, thinking `what if`. But, is the grass always greener in the sun? Of course not, it's usually non-existent, the landscape can be barren and you definitely don't get the manicured countryside that I love about Britain.

In More Ketchup than Salsa, Joe had me laughing so hard that I spilled a cup of tea all over the bed. His tale of travelling from Bolton Fish Market to Tenerife Costa del Bognor opens up the can of worms that most of us never even consider when we are sitting sipping coffee on a terrace and dreaming. This is a hefty dose of Bradshaw on recovering from dysfunction. To be expected in such a long program, some of his favorite jokes and many of his favorite authors and theories come up repeatedly. Since the presentation is taped from live lectures, audience noises are clearly audible. The listener hears other groups doing an exercise at the same time, laughing, applause and sometimes sobbing. A word of caution, the work on "original pain" on tape two is an extremely intense recollection of abuse. Processing this with someone is recommended. Life-Changing Book!

This book is life-changing especially for those who have grown up in a dysfunctional "family" and were abused as children. Healing the inner or wounded child is the main key to beginning the healing and recovery process. Going through the grief work is extremely painful but a necessary part of loss and healing. Anger also must be dealt with in productive ways since anger and grief are two sides of the same coin. I also recommend "Toxic Parents" and "Mothers Who Can't Love" both by Dr. Susan Forward since it introduces a person to soothing or healing the wounded child that each of us were.

For such a rich subject...left me completely unmoved

The initial premise of the book is terrific. We're in the '60s and a doctor finds himself in a situation on a snowy night in which he must deliver his own child, with the help of his nurse Caroline (who has a secret crush on him). The first child, Paul, is healthy, but the second, a girl, is born with Down's Syndrome. The doctor, David, is convinced his wife Norah will not be able to "handle" the trauma of having such a child, so he decides, in an instant, to hand the poor girl to Caroline and asks her to take it to a home for such children and leave it there, never to mention the girl again. He tells his wife that the daughter has died. Caroline runs to the home,finds it to be a hugely disturbing place, and then looking into the face of this new baby, decides she can love the girl and provide her with a life. She runs off with the baby, ready to start a new and uncertain life.

These initial scenes are fairly well done, and though the decision David makes is abhorrent today...it is somewhat tempered by the fact that in the '60s, we as a society weren't quite so compassionate or understanding of folks with Downs. His logic about sparing his wife is questionable, however, and Edwards fairly effectively shows that the gulf between David's initial guilt and wariness about being caught and Norah's grief at losing a child drives the couple further apart. Norah is not allowed to grieve in the way she wants...for example, she isn't allowed to see the body of her lost daughter...for obvious reasons.

Anyway, after this the book falls apart. Author Kim Edwards, it becomes clear, hasn't learned the lesson of "showing us" how people are feeling and thinking, but telling us. We are told over and over that David's secret has blanketed his family, that it's driven him apart from his wife and son. We never really understand specifically how. Does David just act guilty all the time? Does Norah never get over her depression? Is she unable to show love to her son because she wants her daughter? I found the book to be almost completely unconvincing psychologically.

Also, every character in the book (possibly excepting the daughter Phoebe) is hugely UNLIKEABLE and UNSYMPATHETIC. David is simply a pompous jerk. Her makes this huge decision and then can't understand how his lie might effect other people. He just wants his wife to "get over it." Problem is, we see right from the beginning of the book, before the lie even happens, that this is not a happy couple and not one that should ever have married. Norah, the wife, marries David apparently without love for him, and then resents him for being very successful and providing for her and her son the kind of life she married him to get. We also learn a great deal about David's childhood, and none of that rings very true either...the David we see as an adult isn't convincingly the man the young David would have grown up to be.

The son,Paul, is shown as a typical sullen teenager who is not understood by his overbearing father. He escapes to playing guitar, and what do you know...he's practically a genius at that instrument. He talks about music in a way that no real person ever would...only in a way that writer's who can't show us how a person feels but must have them "tell" us.

On the other side of the story, we have the nurse Caroline. She appears to be somewhat heroic, because she does risk a lot to provide a life for Phoebe. Yet we never see the day to day struggles of dealing with a child with Down's Syndrome. Some brief early scenes are all we get...but the structure of the story skips all the day to day details and we see only the "end result,"...which doesn't seem to have been all that difficult...except that the author "tells" us that it was. While Caroline isn't unsympathetic she's just kind of bland and passive.

At one point in the later part of the book, David returns to his old hometown and meets an unusual character. I don't want to spoil it...but let's just say that this person's actions are totally silly at first, and then later this person is clearly meant to cause a seismic shift in the dynamics of David's family...instead we just kind of scratch our heads and wonder at the strangeness of everyone's behavior. I wish I could tell you more...but if you manage to slog your way this far into the book, you should at least have some surprises left.

It took me FOREVER to get through this poorly written, overwraught book. I kept going because it was SUCH a bestseller and so many people liked it. I guess I just totally missed it. I realize I'm asking to get huge amounts of "unhelpful" ratings, but I feel there must be other lone voices out there like me...who just found the book deeply unsatisfactory.

The only reason it gets two stars instead of one is that the initial premise IS original and was done well enough to make me buy the darn book in the first place and continue reading it in the hopes that the author's imagination would once again provide redemption. No such luck.

Read this, read this, read this!

I don't read a lot of fiction and I most especially do not read romances. I'm not sure how this book is categorized but it is the most compulsively readable, emotional, and memorable book I've read since "Gone With the Wind" over 40 years ago. This is an epic story of a doctor who, in an emotional moment and with all his medical knowledge telling him to protect those he loves, makes a decision that affects him and everyone around him forever. On a blizzardly night in 1964, David Henry helps his wife give birth to twins, one a perfect boy and the other a girl with Downs Syndrome. At that time, imperfect children were "put away" in institutions where they died young and families and friends spoke of them in shame-filled whispers, if at all. David grew up with a very sickly sister whose death at age 12 ended all meaningful life for his parents. With all good intentions of sparing his wife and new son the pain he and his parents endured, he made a fateful decision and told his wife the little girl had died at birth. It was a decision that, once made, could not be redeemed nor remedied. Time inexorably moves away from that moment but, instead of becoming distant, it grows tentacles that seize their beings and influence everything for the next three decades. We learn a photograph can capture a moment but it cannot tell you what encompasses it, what came before and after. It cannot effect change, it cannot correct. One moment, one choice, and an ever-widening circle of consequences, many roads taken and many not.

The writing in The Memory Keeper's Daughter is so well-articulated, the story itself is so engrossing and so different from any I have read before, that hard as I tried to remain disaffected, about 100 pages before the end I felt actual pain knowing there was a last page. As I came to know every nuance of these characters, I wanted to reach into the pages and tell them everything, something, anything, to stop time, to take a different road and change the past, then go on again. Honestly, I have never felt quite this way about a book before.

Quite possibly the worst "best seller" I've ever forced myself to read

I seriously can't understand how this book got such glowing reviews and ended up a best seller. I purchased the paperback at an airport based on the description on the back cover and front-cover praise from Sue Monk Kidd. I feel I have been deceived.

If this had been a book written with 6th-10th-graders in mind, I might understand the appeal, but for adults, there very little new here and what little there was was diminished by unrelenting repetition to the point where it felt as though it were being shoved down my throat. As if the author wanted to scream at me, "Get it?! Do you GET IT?! Let me say it one more time so I AM CERTAIN THAT YOU GET IT!!!"

Don't even get me started on the unnecessary descriptive detail that added nothing but words to the pages while characters languished undeveloped--two-dimensional, clich�, pop-psychology placeholders dutifully fulfilling their assigned roles.

Light switches that "give in to touch", the colors of the women's clothing (for all the allusions to feminism in this book, I don't recall the same amount of attention paid to the male characters' clothing), the way sunlight dances...a little of that goes a long way. It reminds me of 9th grade English teachers who remind students to include "lots of the rich description" in their stories--as if the fact that Phoebe's dress was "silvery green" and she carried daffodils "loosely in her right hand" mattered one whit. I want to know what Pheobe thinks, how she feels, not what color her dress is or what kind of flowers she's carrying or in what hand and how. But apparently, beyond her desire to not be whisked off somewhere with strangers and her distaste for escargot, Pheobe has very few thoughts, feelings or opinions. She may have Downs', but surely her head is more than an empty cookie jar.

This book could have been so much more than it was. After the first half, I knew it wasn't going to get better, and it didn't. It actually got worse. But like a train wreck, I couldn't stop looking.

Here, the stakes are clues to the solution of a mystery: Who has surreptitiously eaten the feast prepared for Horace the Elephant's 11th birthday party? The culprit could be any of a number of exotically costumed animal guests, from a pig dressed as an admiral to a pair of giraffes in tutus to a zebra gone punk. The fun of poring over the pictures for hidden messages and significant particulars is, happily, matched by the enjoyment derived from the text--witty, ingenious verses that ably skirt the singsong or mundane. It will take an exceptionally persistent sleuth to deduce the thief's identity; many readers may resort to breaking the seal to the "top secret" solution. Thus enlightened, those returning to the scenes of the crime may still find some clues difficult to discern; in particular, the large number of concealed "mice" are almost impossible to make out. But it is, as Base points out, the thrill of the chase that matters most; and on this count the work scores high marks. All ages.

Grade 3-6-- This picture book is a puzzle mystery written in verse. When Horace the elephant turns 11, he decides to throw an elaborate birthday party and invites 11 friends. The animal guests arrive in costume, and entertain themselves with a variety of activities until it is time to eat. When the 11th hour arrives, however, they are horrified to find that the entire feast has been eaten. All guests protest their innocence, and Horace comes through with sandwiches to save the day. What remains is for readers to discover the culprit. "The Inside Story," a sealed section of pages containing the solution to the mystery and explanations of the plethora of clues and puzzles in the book, follows the story. Intricate watercolor and acrylic paintings in vibrant colors crowd each page, assaulting readers with activity and detail. Both text and paintings are framed by black-and-white decorative borders that provide still more detail. After either breaking a code through careful observation (very, very careful, one must assume) or checking "The Inside Story," readers will uncover the identity of the villains. An engrossing mystery for fun book lovers

I first encountered this book while babysitting, many years ago. It was the kids' new favorite book (they were aged 6-10 perhaps). I read it to them & was enchanted with it (they just liked the story). I put the kids to bed & proceeded to spend 3+ hours (and I was a TV-loving young adult) trying to solve all the riddles & the find the answer to the mystery. I finally figured it out, but later, when I read the previously sealed "who-dunnit" section, I realized how much I'd missed in fantastically re-created architecture & secreted clues & jokes. The author/illustrator is incredibly imaginative & incorporates amazing artistry. I was totally engrossed & completely hooked. The family who introduced me to this book felt strongly about providing intelligent, stimulating & highly creative resources to their children. Since then I have bought this as a gift more than once... The story is simple & rhymes pleasantly so that it is appealing to children. The pictures are complex & fantastic to look at. However, I'm sure the wonder & adventure I found is lost on many children & adults. They may not have the patience or love of mystery that I do, but perhaps they could grow into it, certainly, over time, new discoveries would appear to even the most uninterested reader.

A fantastic book!

My mother first bought this book in 1989. She didn't know about anything about Graeme Base, but was greatly impressed by the illustrations and got it for my siblings and I to pore over. Not only were the illustrations lively and BREATHTAKINGLY BEAUTIFUL, but the mystery itself was so cleverly set up! I never would have guessed...actually we did correctly guess who it was, but we had no idea how until after we opened the seal in the back. Once we did, we realized we didn't know the half of it. By the way, did anybody ever find out the name of the Swan? Because my older sister did, and that was even harder to figure out than "Who Stole The Feast?" (Here's a hint, and I hope it doesn't give the answer away: The Card Game) I guarantee if you buy this book, you will NOT be disappointed!
P.S. "Animalia" was pretty good, too!
