About the Author
David A. Patterson is the Pardee Chair of Computer Science, Emeritus at the University of California Berkeley. His teaching has been honored by the Distinguished Teaching Award from the University of California, the Karlstrom Award from ACM, and the Mulligan Education Medal and Undergraduate Teaching Award from IEEE. Patterson received the IEEE Technical Achievement Award and the ACM Eckert-Mauchly Award for contributions to RISC, and he shared the IEEE Johnson Information Storage Award for contributions to RAID. He also shared the IEEE John von Neumann Medal and the C & C Prize with John Hennessy. Like his co-author, Patterson is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the Computer History Museum, ACM, and IEEE, and he was elected to the National Academy of Engineering, the National Academy of Sciences, and the Silicon Valley Engineering Hall of Fame. He served on the Information Technology Advisory Committee to the U.S. President, as chair of the CS division in the Berkeley EECS department, as chair of the Computing Research Association, and as President of ACM. This record led to Distinguished Service Awards from ACM, CRA, and SIGARCH.

John L. Hennessy is the tenth president of Stanford University, where he has been a member of the faculty since 1977 in the departments of electrical engineering and computer science. Hennessy is a Fellow of the IEEE and ACM; a member of the National Academy of Engineering, the National Academy of Science, and the American Philosophical Society; and a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Among his many awards are the 2001 Eckert-Mauchly Award for his contributions to RISC technology, the 2001 Seymour Cray Computer Engineering Award, and the 2000 John von Neumann Award, which he shared with David Patterson. He has also received seven honorary doctorates.

Digital version is junk

The content of this book is definitely good, but the digital packaging of it is utter crap. This book is designed as a textbook, and as such, when my professor refers to page numbers, I would expect to be able to simply go to the specified page.

Except I can't. Because the digital version is just one long manuscript. One of my friends purchased the actual physical book, and not only does it have page numbers (as it should), the layout itself is both quite different and far superior.

Bottom line, unless they fix the incredibly poor formatting of the digital version, get the physical one if you're using at as a textbook.

Extremely obvious errors left in text

I'm in the middle of homework, and went to reference the IEEE 754 double precision floating point format. The first mention of this in the book is wrong, on page 198 it says that the exponent field is 11 bits, and not two centimetres away has a diagram showing the field with 12 bits.

On a previous chapter, page 69, the first introduction the book gives to arrays of words in memory is wrong, with the 'lw' address being calculated incorrectly.

Unacceptable on a book in its fifth revision.

Filthy with Mistakes

This book is littered with typos. Do not purchase. Example: Page 238, Question 3.18 asks to divide 74 by 21 using unsigned 6-bit integers. Last I recall, the highest 6-bit unsigned integers can go is 64.

I'd stay away from this book as much as you can. I used this textbook for a course and even the professor has a strong disliking towards it. Do not buy.

When you see "DK" on the outside you know something good is on the inside.

At first glance this looks like a coffee table book. My coffee table would give up the cat for this book.

There are many Photography books that usually focus on the authors/editor's favorite people or subjects. These are good but you always find something missing. This book however only sorted by time has just about every popular picture you could think of. Unlike just a coffee table book we get pretty in-depth information of the photos, photographic methods, the photographers and the subject of the photos.

If you have any favorites there is a good chance you will time them. There is a better chance that you will find new favorites. One of mine is under the heading of China's new wave there is a picture of a library that makes me feel at home.

It comes with a glossary and index.

About the Author
Sarbjit Bahga is a Chandigarh based architect, urbanist, author and photo-artist. He graduated in architecture from Panjab University, Chandigarh in 1979. He works in the Department of Architecture, Punjab and have 34 years of practical experience in designing and supervision of various types of buildings, complexes and large campuses. He is also a keen researcher, a prolific architectural writer, and has co-authored six books. His books, Modern Architecture in India: Post-Independence Perspective (1993), New Indian Homes: An Architectural Renaissance (1996) are considered as landmarks in the history of contemporary architecture of India. He is an active member of many professional associations including the Indian Institute of Architects. His contribution to architecture has been largely recognized and his buildings/articles have been widely published in many architectural journals and books.�

Surinder Bahga is a Chandigarh based architect. He established the architectural organisation "Saakaar Foundation" in Chandigarh in 1984. His works are published in many journals and newspapers of repute. Mr. Bahga was given Sir M. Visveswaraya Award in 1995 by HUDCO for energy-efficient housing design. His Baptist Church at Chandigarh is selected by Ministry of Non-Conventional Energy Sources and TERI as one of the best 41 energy-efficient buildings in India. He got Michael Ventris Award from Architectural Association, London. He has co-authored the books Modern Architecture in India: Post-Independence Perspective (1993), New Indian Homes: An Architectural Renaissance (1996). He has researched on a travelling exhibition "A Dream Realized" on life and works of Le Corbusier & Pierre Jeanneret for Swiss Arts Council. He worked as Chairman of IIA, Chandigarh-Punjab Chapter for two terms (2008-2012).�

!READ THIS ONE! It tells a story about a book who's pages are so thin they tear through just staring at them

Okay here's the deal, as I would assume most people who have purchased this book, I did so for a department promotional exam. That being the case, my use of the book entails a LOT of highlighting and underlining. So in regards to the information in the book, well it's there sure, but this book has no....whats the word...PERSONALITY. Yes technically the information is there, but it reads like Ben Stein on Ferris Bueller's Day Off. I've never before had a book sound friggen monotone in my head, yet this book accomplishes that...like that friend's grandfather telling you, what feels like a 10 hour story, about his trip to the grocery store. Basically it is your average textbook that wouldn't keep the attention of a dead raccoon flopped on inside the book.

Alright so apart from that ^^ side of it, HERE is where this book seriously pisses me off. As I said, for promotional exams, it's vital to underline (a bunch) and highlight (even more), and therein lies the issue, the construction of the book is WEAK. The pages are quite literally so thin that it tears under the slightest pressure of not just a ballpoint pen, but also a highlighter...YES highlighting this book tears the pages!! I have never in my life had to deal with a text book TEARING FROM A HIGHLIGHTER (I did attend college...I've hi-lighted a butt load of books!). This is EXTREEEEEMELY annoying when you're trying to study for promotion, stops you in your tracks. That might not be a problem if your department isn't very competitive with promotional exams, and just opening the book gives you a leg up. But for departments (like mine) which are extremely competitive, this is a huge problem...that I would call a study killer! It really is horrible and can only surmise that JB Learning & IAFC did this as a cost saving method...which is horrible. My book at this point, looks like swiss cheese, except it's inedible!

In any case, if you're buying this book just to further you're education in the fire field, I commend you, but buy a different book! Trust me...all the information in pretty much any Hazmat book is the same, it's all standardized, and another book may even have some personality to help you retain the information a bit better. But if you're buying this book because it's on an Exam...well you're just plain screwed and this review will be about as useless as an umbrella in the desert...wait, scratch that, you can use an umbrella to block the sun! So instead I'll say this review is about as useless as a white crayon!

And shame on you JB Learning & IAFC, it's moves like this that prevent people from mentally bettering themselves in the fire field. I'd gladly pay $10 for a product that isn't inferior such as this.

Malaysia and the free market

This book is an interesting review of the past 50 years of Malaysian economic history. It discusses how Malaysia emerged onto the economic scene and how they were able to establish themselves as an economic leader in East Asia. This book gives an interesting comparison of different economic view points and strategies that were put into effect under different Prime Ministers, and also gives an insight into the success of the free market opposed to the a government controlled economy.
As a world leader in exporting tin, rubber, palm oil. Pepper, tropical timber, petroleum and an ever-increasing manufacturing sector, Malaysia is considered to have one of the most successful economies in the world. However, that has not always been the case, Malaysia has battled through multiple regimes that had completely different views on how to build an economy. They have also faced British rule and were unable to experiment or institute their own economic principals until 1957. The country of British Malaya is now known as the Peninsula of Malaysia (Gomez, 1997).
This book also discusses the interaction between business and politics. This book goes onto to explain how Malaysia is a developing democracy that is young when compared to other democracies in East Asia. To define the future of this young growing country, the Malay government under Prime Minister Dr. Mahathir bin Mohamad set fourth a vision for the country, which consisted of significant goals as Malay moved into the 21st century. During the post NEP period Mahathir presented his 2020 Vision plan. As this 2020 Vision plan continues to carry Malaysia into the future, the country will prosper under the economic liberalization undertaken since the mid-1980s, which has encouraged growth in the private sector at the expense of the public sector with privatization and some deregulation.

Real World View

Those pursuing major business (or considering pursuit of business) in Malaysia need to read this book. If you are very familiar with Malaysia politics and business, it makes a great read. Otherwise, only of interest to academics in politics, political economy, and perhaps 'Transparency International.' The only caveat is that it mainly applies to very large business efforts - while something of the entire patronage culture obviously permiates many transaction levels here, only the really big (nationally important) stuff draws the kind of attention discussed in this book.
The book basically presents a slightly pessimistic but fairly accurate view of major business efforts and their effects. The book concludes in the midst of the 1997/8 economic melt-down and subsequent political maneuverings, but stops well short of the late 1999 election.

Insightful and objective

When looking at the political economy of Malaysia many authors are quick in taking an extreme point of view. Gomez and Jomo, on the other hand, focus on the reality of the Malaysian situation. Their analysis of the functioning of Malaysia's political economy is frank and thoroughly backed up. By concentrating on the effects of Mahathir's privatisation policies on the Malaysian economy, they have pinpointed several key structural weaknesses which need to be addressed; especially in view of the pressing politial and economic issues which are currently affecting Malaysia. The book therefore, is an absolute must for people interested in Malaysia's complex economic structure.

OWNING A LORIS IS ILLEGAL!!

It is ILLEGAL to keep a Loris as a pet!!! They are an endangered specie so keeping one as a pet is a criminal offence! By buying a Loris you are funding the illegal pet trade (and usually various other illegal practices). Keeping a Loris as a pet is extremely cruel (no matter how good your intentions) Not to mention the severe abuse these animals receive before purchase (un-anesthetised tooth removal, physical & mental cruelty, etc). THIS BOOK IS PROMOTING ILLEGAL AND HARMFUL PRCTICES ND SHOULD NOT BE ON AMAZON!!

Great Book for Beginners and Equirers

Wow! At last, a book on these fascinating little creatures. I've been interested in them for ages and although I probably won't get one (a bit too exotic for me) I wanted to know more about them. Although only 118 pages, this book goes into every aspect. It covers the different types of Slow Loris, their lifestyle and habitat and how to recreate this if keeping one as a pet so they will be happy and stay healthy. It also talks about what NOT to do, which is equally important, with a focus on the animal AND the owner staying safe. Apparently, Slow Lorises (is that the correct plural?) can be venomous and the videos on the internet that show them being "tickled" are very bad as the animals are being tortured. I learned a lot about conservation efforts and the book gives resources for adoption and getting involved in these efforts. It's very clear that the author cares deeply about the animals.
Overall, I found this a well written and well rounded book. Very easy to read and gives the reader the information necessary to make a decision about whether a Slow Loris is a good pet for you. It is also full of beautiful, full colour photos.
Well worth the price.

Please don't encourage the illegal exotic animal trade

The Slow Loris is a noctournal wild animal, not suited to be a domestic pet. When captured for sale as pets, the Loris's teeth are often painfully removed or broken with clippers to make them "safe" for humans, and many slowly die due to infected wounds and other ailments caused by captivity. Please watch the BBC documentary "The Natural World: Jungle Gremlins of Java" (or visit the "Little Fireface Project" website) to learn more about the Slow Loris and the suffering brought upon them by the exotic animal trade.
