"Success Means Doing What Others Won't"

After reading "Take The Stairs" I can honestly say that my perspective has changed.

My perspective on how I approach business, my family, my friends, and life.

In business I apply Rory Vaden's principle of "The Law of the Pendulum" and am always reminding myself that if there is something I need to do... to just do it now! Pick up the phone, send the thank you card, read the book, etc.

In my family life I apply the "Rent Axiom". When it comes to being a good husband and father... I'm always reminding myself of Mr Vaden's idea that "success is never owned it's rented, and the rent is due everyday". And his joke is true... some days the rent is higher than others. :)

With my friends I'm always thinking about "Pain Paradox Principle". Knowing that if I don't make a decision everyday to be a good friend and make good decisions when spending time with my friends that the consequences of my small decisions that bring pleasure in the short term can have drastic effects in the long term.

In life I have truly found myself literally and figuratively taking the stairs. If there is something I don't want to do, I remind myself that "success means doing things that others won't".

Stairway to Success

Rory Vaden's Take the Stairs isn't just a book. It isn't a system that you'll try and forget over time. It is truly a new way of thinking that becomes natural the more you practice it, so much so that you won't believe you hadn't been thinking that way all along. I have found myself to be more productive in work than ever before, more joyful in my time with family and friends, more rested in my down time, and all around more driven and satisfied with life. You may hesitate to read this because you're afraid of change - most people are - but face this new way of living, your own set of stairs, boldly. You'll be so glad you did!

It is the little things (and the big ones)

I agree wholeheartedly with his point of view. Don't just take the easy way - take the way that has the best results long term. As the title suggests - take the stairs rather then the escalator or elevator (a habit I do 80% of the time if it is less then 4 flights (and often the other is because I do not know where the stairs are))

His seven steps:

1 - Sacrifice. I do not like the wording since it seems like a punishment. The gist of it is - do tough things now for the success it yields in the long term. Like one of my success mantras "Successful people do tough things".

2 - Commitment. It is our decision what we commit to. The greater the commitment, the great the chance of success.

3 - Focus. He really nailed this one. This is an area that I personally am not good at. I tend to want it all so focus on everything (and I don't think that is what he means by good focus)

4 - Integrity. Speaks for itself.

5 - Schedule. Create a schedule that meets all your needs. To some extent this also touches on success habits.

6 - Faith - Put faith into enjoyable results, not enjoyable processes. (goes a bit against the zen I try for which is enjoying the process. Although in the end, I would not be happy without the results)

7 - Action. You are much more likely to act your way into healthy thinking than think yourself into healthy action. In the end, it is the actions - not the thoughts that make things happen.

I loved the chapter on procrastination. Some quotes:

"When we have diluted focus, we get diluted results"
"In the absense of disciplined focus, we become strangely loyal to performing daily acts of trivia."
"We don't pay attention to things we don't first give our intention to."

A Great Book for Understanding Approaches to Solving The Global Warming Problem

I have been a climate scientist for more than 30 years, always staying away from voicing my opinion about policy issues. This book among other recent events has caused me to speak out more. The case for coal being the dominant cause of AGW is made convincingly in this book. Most other fixes are inconsequential. The various alternative approaches to dealing with the problem are explained clearly. Taxation of carbon via cap and trade or a direct tax is covered nicely. Another key principle often misunderstood by the public is discounting, again explained and illustrated well. This is a great book, clearly written and accessible to all who want to know more about the subject. I hope it is read by millions of caring citizens.

Good primer on climate, but limited by economist perspective

This an easy to read introduction to climate change. Norhaus reviews the technical aspects and the policy history well. He makes a good case for some kind of carbon pricing to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The book suffers from the tendency, perhaps common among economists, to discount the role of power in society. He comes to it near the end of the book, but it is unsatisfying. Also, he dismisses any role for government aside from the institution of a carbon tax. I agree this is an effective mechanism for fighting climate change, but other regulations and incentives are given short shrift in the discussion. Indeed, he can be so dismissive that his analysis suffers. Still, I use Climate Casino in a college classroom to discuss climate change and it is valuable as long as other readings or discussion can fill in the gaps and provide a more complete context.

Updated information along with a practical, business oriented approach to climate change

Bill Nordhaus does a great job of approaching climate change from a risk management, business oriented approach, incorporating new information from scientists about the risks of climate change. And he summarizes by considering practical political limitations to getting anything done. With the latest data on the impacts of projected CO2 and Temperature within likely ranges we will see, he shows impacts over the range, costs to avoid the worst tipping points, etc. His discussion of tipping points is especially helpful as the risk of triggering catastrophic impacts hinges around tipping points, understanding them, assessing our odds of tripping them, and evaluating the costs of options we have in the near term for optimizing our strategies to try to avoid passing any of these catastrophic thresholds. I'm hoping my generation (the baby boomers) won't be held responsible for catastrophic climate change, and while things are not looking too good right now, this PhD economist provides some valuable tools to the practical among us who want to deal with this as optimally as possible. I hope more of us read his book and give this huge challenge some serious consideration.

A Well Written Book; Highly Effective Exercises

The very first exercise I tried - worked. The day I received the book- I decided to give one of the exercises a try. I was always interested in clairvoyance - so I opened the page on clairvoyance and tried the exercise. I was surprised to find out that I could actually see what another person was doing at the time I performed an exercise. I later confirmed that the information that I received was correct when performing the exercise.

This said, I do not know if the exercises will work for other readers right away or with time. For me - that exercise worked right away probably because I had many psychic experiences throughout my life and because I am fascinated with the paranormal.

I also like the language of the book. The language is refined and the book is easy to follow. The stories the writer provides in the book are highly inspirational and although the book is not packed with billions of exercises- the exercises it does contain seem to be effective.

I also wanted to mention that I bought countless amount of books on psychic development and this is my ultimate favourite. Many of the other books are packed with exercises but those exercises are either difficult to perform, annoying and not interesting to perform or do not generate any results. In summary, this book is exceptional in effectiveness of its material and in richness of its language.

Good try, a bit too simplistic

The general information in this book is correct, but I felt a bit too simplistic and could have used more instruction. For example, the exercises begin with relax and perhaps instructions to take some deep breaths. It helps to go a bit deeper when beginning by using a simple meditation such as focusing on the breath to silence the mind and relax more deeply than simply taking some deep breaths. Also, for seeing auras, while this need not be complicated, again, a bit more explanation would be advisable. Sanders instructs to shift your vision to your Vision Psychic Reception area (basically your aina chakra) and try to look just beyond the person. While this is basically correct Sanders fails to instruct on some simple adjustments that may have to be made at first such as dimming the light. Despite what people may think, simple is best and usually correct. As one psychic put it to me, if it's complicated it's probably wrong. I just think these instructions are little too simple and need a bit more explanation.

Easy To Understand Insights Into Psychic Ability

The book was very interesting and easy for me to understand. I have not found another book that explains how to develop one's psychic skills to this extent so clearly and in such detail. I would recommend it highly for anyone wanting to refine their psychic abilities. There are some wonderful anecdotes which personalize this book and make it seem highly relevant to anyone who is tuned in to the subtle feelings and signals which are commonly referred to as ESP.

Seth Godin, one of the world's foremost online promoters, offers his best advice for advertising in Permission Marketing. Godin argues that businesses can no longer rely solely on traditional forms of "interruption advertising" in magazines, mailings, or radio and television commercials. He writes that today consumers are bombarded by marketing messages almost everywhere they go. If you want to grab someone's attention, you first need to get his or her permission with some kind of bait--a free sample, a big discount, a contest, an 800 number, or even just an opinion survey. Once a customer volunteers his or her time, you're on your way to establishing a long-term relationship and making a sale. "By talking only to volunteers, Permission Marketing guarantees that consumers pay more attention to the marketing message," he writes. Another piece of gold from " the past" with more knowledge than 10+ current "marketing books

This book is about 17 years old which means the knowledge is in the neighborhood of 20 years old but really it is much older. Why read it? Because this is as or more relevant now, 2016, than it was in 1999. I tend to be a bit biased to some older books and this one is no exception. Why? Because it was written before books became the trendy thing "to do" because it was great for marketing. Any chance you have to learn from a practitioner you'll be better off than reading what some college professor or researcher or worse, someone who is just trying to market/brand themselves.
More signs of a good book; If you can take it's content and apply it to the current times and it will still produce profits. Want more? Although he might have been slightly off on a couple of things, a good chunk of this book is essentially Mr. Godin looking into a crystal ball and describing the future.
A great intersection of past knowledge, current trends(circa 1999 but still relevant) and a wonderful philosophy, compiled by a human being that repeatedly helps makes humanity better.

It's fabulous but outdated

To get this off my chest I want to begin by saying that illustrating the statement "Frequency works" with Muhammad Ali's fight record is simply wrong, or, at best a not well chosen example. Godin writes "Muhammad Ali did not become heavyweight champion by punching twenty people one time each. No, he became the champ by punching one guy twenty times. By applying frequency to the poor opponent's head, Ali was able to bring his message home..."

I might have ignored this if it did not come up a second time.

"... Back to Muhammad Ali again. After he's hit someone ten times and the guy's still standing, the opportunity for a quick knockout is long gone. Only through persistence..."

If this is about illustrating `persistence' there are better examples. If this is about "boxing/Muhammad Ali AND persistence" it's a really bad example. Muhammad Ali averaged 9th round KOs. That was Ali's style. Mike Tyson averaged 3rd round KOs. That was Tyson's style. Indeed, Tyson knocked out Michael Spinks in 91 seconds in one of the fastest KOs in the heavyweight division.

Whereas Ali took the time to dance with the "Ali Shuffle, to showboat, and even talk to his opponent, Tyson did what he came to do -without show (he sold the outcome). But there is a lesson to be learned. After some time Tyson's fights could not be sold in the United States anymore; most famously Tyson vs. Buster Douglas took place in Tokyo, because Americans weren't going to pay hundreds of dollars for what they thought would be a 90 seconds fight (Boxing is about entertainment too). Ali knew this. That is why boxing is such a bad example for the contents of this book. Any boxer, who pursues "selling the fight and going for a later round knock-out" risks injury and loss, but fighters, who go for the quick sale, cannot sell anymore after they have done this for a while. So, if the "message" is about winning, the strategy depends on the opponent, and that is why boxing is not a great example.

Aside from this flaw Seth Godin's book is a great book. His elaborations about permission marketing vs. traditional Interruption marketing are brilliant and I can only guess what a huge impact this book made in 1999. Even today students of marketing must be riveted to read about the historic developments in marketing, never mind that some of the quoted companies don't exist anymore. E.g. my children (in their early 20's), who know much more about phones than I will ever know, have never heard of MCI. Then again, maybe reading about MCI might prompt them to read up on who this former telecommunications company was and find out why it went down.

Of course telecommunication companies are notorious for their ridiculous approaches. For a short while I was Charter's customer. This company thought they can handle `permission marketing' their own way. Even though I told them that I wanted to buy Internet services only, and that I haven't had TV since 2009, and, that I did not intend to get TV because I find nothing worthy to watch, they called me every 10 days to offer me TV. So I cancelled them. At that occasion the customer service representative asked me why I cancelled their services and I told him that I felt harassed. To which he replied that I should have gotten on their no-call list. To which I replied, that no, the fact that they knew my phone number did not entitle them to call me anytime between 8-5 whenever they felt like it. Not even my mother calls me during working hours. Additionally, the fact that I told them more than 20 times in no uncertain terms that I was not interested in getting TV, clearly demonstrated that they were NOT listening to their customer. My new provider sends me "invitations to get TV" every 2 weeks, via snail mail. I throw their mail into my recycle bin.
Naturally, Seth Godin elaborates about telecommunications companies too, only he writes about Bell Atlantic, which today is Verizon. I wonder how many of the younger readers of this book know that.

The above is a perfect example of permission marketing gone wrong and I would hope that somebody from Charter's marketing department reads Seth Godin's book sometime soon. I really appreciated Seth Godin's elaborations about the "five levels of permission". Looking into my Inbox I can tell that many corporations' marketing departments have taken Seth Godin's advice to heart. Of course the downside of this is that most people simply delete their flood of emails and that's that. In fact email providers are developing programs to assist this process because people don't have enough time to unsubscribe the unwanted content.

Absolutely brilliant are Godin's mentioning of Columbia Record Club and the Book of the Months Club. Indeed it was these concepts that lay the foundation for brilliant permission marketing but we don't get to read too much about these great innovators anymore.

While I realize that the book is listed as "published in 1999" I had hoped that the book included some kind of an update, maybe a 3-5 page foreword would have been excellent. The way how it is presented "Permission Marketing: Turning Strangers Into Friends, and Friends Into Customers" is more of a history book than a cutting edge book. That kind of surprised me.

Enterprise Ecosystems and Personal Maturation

The book is the crystallization of the ideas coming out of a series of participatory design events focused on regenerative investment hosted by the Financial Permaculture Institute, in some of which I’ve been a participant.

The book is especially brilliant for two reasons:

The way it outlines the necessity of ecosystems of enterprises founded on the values of permaculture design
It’s emphasis on personal maturation, a topic which I’ve yet to see in other resources produced by the greater New Economics community
To answer the question of what is regenerative, I’ll start with a series of sweeping stereotypes summarizing the three fundamental types of economic models:

*The Eight Forms of Capital Model could assist in reaching a deeper understanding of the following overview.

I - Extractive

The extractive economy transforms living and cultural capital into financial capital through financialization. Profitability is tied to the effectiveness of an enterprises’ ability to externalize it’s impacts.

II - Social

The evolution of the extractive enterprise over the years to it’s current form has horrified many to innovate. The dominant solution? Social enterprise.

Social enterprise has realized the shortcomings of extractive enterprise, and targets the limiting of it’s living and cultural impacts at one stage of its supply chain.

In some ways, social enterprise is less ethical than extractive enterprise. Nobody driving a Lamborghini claims to be helping the environment with that decisions. But many have been lulled into thinking that driving a Prius could actually help the environment. This fallacy is particularly dangerous because it soothes people into unconsciousness.

The issue here? The driver of the super car has a rudimentary consciousness of their impacts, and on some level, has consciously chosen their path. The driver of the hybrid has gone asleep, and well think they’re doing enough to “save the world” when they’re actually more locked into the paradigm than the driver of the super car.

Not that Toms doesn’t care about these issues. But if one were to create balance sheets for all three accounts - people, planet, and profit - the profit would come up in the black but the people and planet would still be left in the red. Just because there’s revenue doesn’t mean there’s net profit.

Even when a social enterprise has a strong mission, if it wants to grow it’s “impact” [a force embedded in our money and culture] it needs to tap into the extractive economy ecosystem. And even if our entire economy was composed of social enterprises, it would never become sustainable, because social enterprises aren’t based on a systems perspective.

III - Regenerative

Regenerative enterprise takes in financial capital and yields living and cultural capital.

As I point out in the last section, this is only possible with an ecosystem of enterprises that operate together. And different enterprises are optimized for different yields. Not every enterprise yields living and cultural capital. But they are functionally interconnected such that the synergies of the system net living and cultural capital.

Enterprise Ecosystems

All enterprises are embedded in a greater web. One fundamental aspect of this universe is the interconnection of all components. The functionality and consciousness of this interconnection is vital.

Extractive enterprise operates in an ecosystem. If ExxonMobil needs IT solutions, it can turn to Alcatel Lucent and scale out instantly across operations in over a hundred countries. And then if Alcatel Lucent need to distribute it’s physical units, it can turn to UPS, a global parcel service. The effectiveness of this ecosystem at yielding financial profit in the short term can’t be underestimated. It’s “success” is based on the principle of functional interconnection.

But, partially due to the anonymity synonymous with financial capital, feedback loops surrounding living and cultural stocks are predominantly unconscious. Not with regenerative enterprise.

Personal Maturation

The shift from social to regenerative is a cultural shift, a paradigm shift. It doesn’t happen overnight, and it doesn’t happen easily. People going through this shift need a lot of personal support, and need the courage to seek support and confront their deepest fears. Understandably, the dominant paradigm of extraction trains us to suppress the most effective methods of dealing with these issues.

Supporting people in this deep personal work of holistic maturation is an aspect of my life’s work. Bill Plotkin gives an excellent overview of of these ideas in his book, “Nature and the Human Soul.”

In summary, “Regenerative Enterprise” is a phenomenal read, and I’d highly recommend it to anyone in the new economics and permaculture movements.

An important contribution to how we think about capital and business.

This book is an important contribution to the conversation on how to shift to a healthier, happier, more abundant planet. By looking deeply at our economic systems and recontextualizing the concept of capital, Regenerative Enterprise shows us how we as individuals as well as society can "include and transcend" capitalism as we know it. It's time for positive change, and the authors demonstrate that it is already happening. I highly recommend this read to all who are interested in what role enterprise can take in the global shift toward holistic health.

These authors are actually doing what they write about. This book should be required reading for all business students. It's relevance is well worth the read for everyone and especially useful for those who are trying to change the world.
