Still Keeps the Shakespeare Emphasis

This tale of an intersex Richard III becomes more and more interesting with each volume. Kanno is definitely having a lot of fun with the whole medieval milieu following the end of the War of the Roses. While the first two volumes were a bit confusing owing to a huge array of characters, by this title the list is narrowing nicely. It may still be a huge shock to see an actual Gallery of London portrait compared to the lovely stylized manga character. But the appeal of this title is definitely reminiscent of seminal 1970s shoujo classics such as Rose of Versailles: The pertinent historical facts are there but a whole lot of drama is woven around them.

Former King Henry VI has regained lucidity through Richard; but if Henry's insanity was a tragedy, his recovery is a national disaster. Abandoning wife Margaret of Anjou and disinherited son Edward, Henry seeks out the solace that Richard provides. Unfortunately, at this moment, Richard has to provide unwilling alibi to his licentious brother Henry V - who has decided to marry beneath status to widow Elizabeth of York. Her scheming, along with Margaret of Anjou's, threaten to destroy all the happiness any of the York or Lancastrian men can achieve. Caught between the scheming are the Kingmaker - Earl of Warwick and a young but fierce Duke of Buckingham.

Anyone knowledgeable about this period of the War of the Roses can enjoy the liberties taken by Kanno to create her story. Sure, it is high drama through a modern sensibility. But Kanno has laid her groundwork correctly and the known facts are there for a somewhat supernatural mystery taking more emphasis from Shakespeare (with all the historical faults therein) rather than Wikipedia. Little details - such as the two young men (Richard and Edward) who would marry the same woman, Anne Neville, share a 'kiss' in a river rescue. Kanno enjoys her foreshadowing that the men would share much more in the future.

Those without knowledge of the period can sit back and enjoy the plot of schemes and the rise and fall of kings. Although we know for sure that Richard III was slightly hunched but not a cripple (or intersex, here) this is still a greatly enjoyable fictionalization of history. It is good to take it slow ....

I enjoyed Vols 1 and 2 very much. This one is enjoyable too: what an imagination Aya Kanno has! She is certainly playing the intersex Richard for all it is worth.

The intriguing thing is how slowly she is moving. The current impression given is that there is only Vol 4 to come after this, but there will be a howl of outrage from the world of Richard's fans if she stops at Vol 4. You can't ride with Richard III without riding all the way, to the final charge on Bosworth field. So, I assume she won't; and at the rate she's going through Richard's life, she will have to go at least as far as Vol 8, if not beyond. Not that I'm complaining ... I look forward to it.

I'm hooked

I don’t know if it’s just me or if Kanno has finally reached a flow with this series, but this volume was really good for me.

Elizabeth has brought her plans of revenge on King Edward to fruition, and is made Queen. Richard is the only one who has real doubts about it, though Warwick feels betrayed. In the other house, Margaret has gone insane, and is using her son Edward to enact revenge on Henry.

The best point in this series for me, though, is Richard and Henry’s relationship. I really feel for them, and think they could have a real friendship or romance, if their lives were different. They get to spend some real time together in this volume, and it’s a sweet reprieve for both of them. I want more of that, honestly.

Aside from that, things are getting dark fast. Not a surprise, but still. And Kanno has a beautiful art style for this series; the expressions, dark and hopeful, are done extremely well. They’re gorgeous.

This volume has me hooked, and I’m excited for the next one.

Great little book

I really enjoy this book even though it is a quick read. The points are very clear and concise, plus I appreciate the addition of example worksheets to follow in applying the books concepts. I highly recommend this book and cannot argue with the price.

This book might be good for a middle school student.

I found neither new information in this book nor any useful insights.
To explain the level of discourse in this book, I'll employ an analogy:
When I first learned about accounting and finance we used a lemonade stand example to explain COGS, SG&A, working capital, etc.
If this book took a similar parable approach, it probably would have been more helpful (but still only at the level of an extreme novice). Instead the book lists suggestions for "strategic thinking" in 7 chapters:
1. See the big picture
2. Articulate Strategic objectives
3. Identify relationships, patterns, and trends
4. get creative
5. Analyze information
6. Prioritize your actions
7. Make trade-offs

If concepts such as
estimating how long parts of a project will take, find potential bottlenecks, make sure you have all the relevant information, think creatively before settling on a course of action
are new to you, maybe you will find this book worthwhile.

This is the first text and monograph about DNA computing, a molecular approach that might revolutionize our thinking and ideas about computing. Although it is too soon to predict whether computer hardware is likely to change from silicon to carbon and from microchips to DNA molecules, the theoretical premises have already been studied extensively. The book starts with an introduction to DNA-related matters, the basics of biochemistry and language and computation theory, and progresses to the advanced mathematical theory of DNA computing.

Apart from being well-known scientists, all three authors are known for their lucid writing. Many of their previous books have become classics in their field, and this book too is sure to follow their example.

Very technical after chapter 2; reads like a calculus book.

Chapters 1 & 2 make for interesting and informative reading. The rest of the book reads like a calculus book and is obviously meant only for the most technically literate: you should know (and like) Chomsky grammars and want to learn about their (mathematical) relationship with DNA bases.
Topics include: Sticker Systems, Watson-Crick Finite Automata, Splicing Systems, Universality by Finite H Systems, and Splicing Circular Strings

Very Technical Analysis -1998 not 2005 book

First, this 'edition' listed in Amazon as 2005 seems to be identical to the edition I have listed in Lib of Congress as 1998-

The Table of Contents and Index are identical down to the page numbers.

Nonetheless it is a vary theoretical analysis of potential models which relate to DNA computing as Formal Language Theory models and the proofs of various capabilities of these languages which might be implementable with DNA techniques. This is not for the faint of heart or lay reader, ie not a mathematical/computing theorist.

It is an excellent start if this is your perspective.

Abysmal and juvenile - waste of time and money.

I literally have never seen a fashion book that bad. I like the style on Gossip Girl and I was really looking toward this book. I have pretty much everything else on subject - InStyle and Lucky books, Rachel Zoe, Victoria Beckham, books of Chanel, Carolina Herrera, The Pocket Stylist etc etc. Any one of them is vastly superior to this book. I am absolutely baffled that any agent would look at this book and think this will be a success.
If you have never read a single fashion magazine, then perhaps this book will be of interest. There are maximum 10 photos, rest are drawings. Text is so on the 5th grade level ie. 2 pages on there are 4 types of sweater: turtleneck, tunic, v-neck and crew neck. Stunning, isn't it? And comments that go along are: V-neck for victory! Sail your crewneck to the shore or smth stupid like that.
Not sure who is targeting either. On one section he shows how to cut up a t-shirt (which everyone has already done), then there's a picture of neon pink leggings next to a pencil skirt. I was bewildered. Any fashion book will have the content of this one but so much more. This guy is so lucky to have a job.

Don't Bother

As a fashion blogger, I love to read style books. So I was quite excited for this book especially since it's written by Eric Daman. I figured the man who dresses the Gossip Girl cast so spectacularly would surely write a fantastic, well-informed book. However, I'm disappointed to say that this book was a complete waste of money.

The book features incredibly basic information that a majority of people are already well aware of. For instance, there are pages dedicated to the different styles of skirts, jeans, tops, and cardigans. There is even two pages dedicated to classifying different skirt lengths! Aren't we all already aware of what classifies a skirt as mini, knee-length, ankle length, etc.? There are even sections on types of bras and underwear. Seriously, how superfluous is that? (Come on, Daman! Is this the best you could do, really?)

At twenty-one years old I found this information to be completely useless. I didn't learn anything new from Daman. Perhaps the information within this book is better suited to a middle-schooler who knows nothing about clothing.

Bottom line: Don't waste your money. If you really still want to read it, go to a bookstore, take a seat, and read it. It will take all of fifteen minutes.

I'm so glad I didn't end up ordering this book, but looked through it (it took all of ten seconds) at the bookstore instead. I expected it to be full of pictures of cool clothes, fun gossip girl fashion and inspiration. This has none of that. The paper quality is even bad! There are barely any pictures, the fashion that IS there is awful and unwearable, and the "inspirations" are things we've already seen a million times (turtleneck, t-shirt, basic dress...)yawn. Maybe buy used, but even then, don't bother with this book unless you're in 6th grade.

I've so far only read part of this book--the part where I'm mentioned and quoted. It was a major moment in my young life, and I was fortunate to correspond with Mr. Provan, and send him the photo of my souvenir menu. He has done an excellent job, and recorded a significant period in German-American relations.

While I am assuming you have some basic programming experience, you won't need to have an extensive background in JavaScript itself to get the examples up and running. Chances are, no matter what programming language you might be familiar with, you will be able to get up to speed with the code in this book rather quickly, even if you've never touched JavaScript before.

Finally, the intent of this book is not to supply you with a bunch of programs that you blindly copy and run. The idea is that you will understand what is happening in the code and why, and use the example programs as a starting point for your own explorations. As such, this can also include converting the code to the language and platform of your choice. JavaScript's syntax is simple enough that the examples should be readily translatable into most other currently popular languages.

Highly Recommended

This is a highly readable, highly viewable look at the beautiful things that a bit of programming can produce, without needing any special tools. Like many people, I started programming doing graphics with simple code. This would be a *great* way to explore the fun side of programming for someone starting out. The code is very approachable and clean - things that are hard can be skipped and come back to. Also the code is totally ready for experimenting with, it's always amazing what changing a few parameters can bring regardless of how long you've been at it.

I would recommend this not only to people starting out though. It really is a great way for a seasoned programmer to get back to the basics of what is so compelling about code. Simple things make amazing things, and these things are inherent in the relationships of amounts. It also reminds us, in these days of so many devices, OSs, libraries, frameworks -- that we can still start from nothing and very quickly have something. Most importantly it reminds us how fun programming can be.

Keith is one of those people who can make hard things clear without skipping important details. He not only convinces you that something like diffusion-limited aggregation is interesting, but motivates you to try mucking with it and convince yourself.

Can't recommend this enough. It is the best read/manual I've seen on this subject, and the only one I've seen at such an impulse price. Set aside a weekend and treat your busy mind to some candy.

Great mix of theory and practicality

This is a great book. Keith Peters goes through enough of the theory and history in plain English to understand the context of the code but not to bore the reader. The examples are extremely fun to code and play around with.

My all-time favourite young kids' book

A classic from the Dr. Seuss "Beginner Books" series, and in my opinion, the best of that series.
Not a story as such, but a wonderfully simple rhyme about many of the childhood joys of summer. The pictures complement the text ideally. One of my favourite books as a child, and now as a parent. Oh yes, the kids love it too.
The companion book "Snow" has the same illustrator but a different author(s) for some reason. Nevertheless it also is very good, and it is well worth having both (kids like to read both in one sitting).
Looking at the "peek inside", it seems the pictures have been touched up in the new release. The girl now has dark hair. I've no idea why they did this. I hope it hasn't been spoilt.

An Excellent Look At Citizens Media

Television, print, radio, etc. has long been the bastion of traditional media. That is, until the Internet became the tool of the people, allowing us to participate in content creation in ways never before seen. The masses have become less content in being subscribers to traditional media outlets; the Internet has become one of the major tools through which citizens have taken the idea of Journalist off its high pedestal and is helping us to reshape the very nature of who makes content and why it is important.

Dan Gillmor is a journalist of both traditional and new media, and his "Wethe Media" is an excellent study into how citizen's media is of growing importance in today's society. Gillmor uses a variety of relatively recent cases, such as the Howard Dean candidacy, and looks closely at how these instances are proving that citizens media is maturing rapidly and its tools will become the new face of new media.

An excellent, easy to read bit of work, Gillmor has done a stellar job in the tradition of Reingold, Lessig and others in exploring and supporting the common man in the face of tradition.

Easy to read overview, sensible, read with Trippi's book

Joe Trippi's book, The Revolution Will Not Be Televised: Democracy, the Internet, and the Overthrow of Everything joins Howard Rheingold's book, Smart Mobs: The Next Social Revolution and Bill Moyer's collaborative book, Doing Democracy as the companions for this book--taken together, the four books provide everything any group needs to "take back the power."

Whereas Trippi provides a personal story that illuminates the new power that comes from combining citizen activism with Internet-enabled networking, this book focuses more on the role the Internet and blogs play in the perception and dissemination of accurate unbiased information. It is not only an elegant presentation, easy to read, with good notes and a fine seven-page listing of cool web sites, but it also provides a useful survey of past writings on this topic--with due credit to Alvin Toffler's first perception of the trend toward mass customization and the elimination of intermediaries, together with original thoughts from the author.

This book could become a standard undergraduate reference on non-standard news sources and the blurring of the lines between producers and consumers of information (or in the government world, of intelligence).

Resistance to change by established media; the incredible emotional and intellectual growth that comes from having a "media" of, by, and for the people that is ***open*** to new facts and context and constantly being ***refreshed***, and the undeniable ability of the people in the aggregate to triumph in their assembled expertise, over niche experts spouting biases funded by specific institutions, all come across early in the book.

The book is provocative, exploring what it means when more and more information is available to the citizen, to include information embedded in foods or objects that communicates, in effect, "if you eat me I will kill you," the author's most memorable turn of phase that really makes the point.

While respecting privacy, the author notes that this may, as David Brin has suggested, be a relic of a pre-technological time. Indeed, I was reminded of the scene in Sho-Gun, where a person had to pause to defecate along the side of the trail, and everyone else simply stood around and did not pay attention--a very old form of privacy that we may be going back to.

Feedster gets some good advertising, and it bears mention that Trippi is still at the Google/email stage, while Gillmor is at the Feedster/RSS/Wiki stage.

Between Trippi and Gillmor, the term "open source politics" can now be said to be established. The line between open source software, open source intelligence or information, and open spectrum can be expected to blur further as public demands for openness and transparency are backed up with the financial power that only an aroused and engaged public can bring to bear.

Gilmor is riveting and 100% on target when he explores the meaning of all this for Homeland Security. He points out that not only is localized observation going to be the critical factor in preventing another 9-11, but that the existing budget and program for homeland security does not provide one iota of attention to the challenge of soliciting information from citizens, and ensuring that the "dots" from citizens get processed and made sense of.

The book slows in the middle with some case studies I could have done without, and then picks up for a strong conclusion by reviewing the basic laws (Moore, Metcalfe, Reed) in order to make the point, as John Gage noted in 2000, that once you have playstations wired for Internet access, and DoKoMo mobile phones that pre-teens can afford, the people ***own*** the world of information.

Spies and others concerned about deception and mischief on the Internet will appreciate the chapter on trolls, spin, and the boundaries of trust. Bottom line: there are public solutions to private misbehavior.

The chapter on lawyers and the grotesque manner in which copyright law is being extended and perverted, allowing a few to steal from our common heritage while hindering innovation (the author's words), should outrage. Lawrence Lessin and Cass Sunstein are still the top minds on this topic, but Gillmore does a fine job of articulating some of the key points.

The book ends on a great note: for the first time in history, a global, continuous feedback loop among a considerable number of the people in possible. This may not overthrow everything, as Trippi suggests, but it most assuredly does ***change*** everything.

I have taken one star away because of really rotten binding--the book, elegant in both substance and presentation, started falling apart in my hands within an hour of my cracking it open.

The future of news gathering

First a disclaimer. I've only read the drafts Dan posted on his blog. But from those chapters, this book is unlike anything written before. Dan is a rare combination of a strong technologist and brilliant journalist with strong ethics. Taken together this book describes events and makes predictions about the future of news reporting, particularly as it is influenced by the Internet. One of the best examples is a conference in which a CEO of a prominent company was speaking lamenting about his business problems. While this conference was being blogged, Buzz Bruggeman, reading the blog, did a quick search and found this speaker had just made a killing selling his options. Before he finished his talk he was confronted with this information, proving there's no where to hide when it comes to the Internet.

Very good intro

This book covers an incredible range of topics - from scripting to graphics to using the GPIO pins. It is clear and easy to read with only a few minor typos. All of the code in the book is also available on the web site which saves a lot of typing.

If I had one complaint it would be that the book is truly an introduction in the first few chapters but seems to get a little thinner on the details later on in the book. For example, it spends a good bit of time explaining basic programming concepts such as syntax and logical constructs. And for most of the chapters it describes what is happening in the code line-for-line. But in the chapter on GPIO programming it says not to worry about how the function interacting with the hardware operates. This would have been a very good place to go into a lot of detail.

Very good Python introduction, limited Pi info

Learning Python with Raspberry Pi is a good Python beginner book and gets you started step by step with general computer knowledge followed by step by step programming. Software projects are multi platform which is good but very little is offered on utilizing the special functions or the Pi platform. There is a good amount of information about the Pi hardware and how it works but I expected to have see some good hardware interface programming examples to get started with a Python Pi hardware project instead of so much time on graphics which is prettly limited on the Pi platform.

Since it isn't listed in the product description I will post the Table of Contents which is available in the "Click to Look Inside" preview so it is easier to reference.

Book is OK but feel it is a little pricey.

Bought this book as an amazon ebook. Currently working through the programming exercises. It is relatively easy to follow and the examples are definitely interesting and fun. Examples use mostly API python modules for coding. It is always amazing how little code it can take to create a fully functional application using api components. The web browser app surprised me and works quite well. The writer certainly knows his stuff. The example code can be downloaded to save time but I like to manually enter the code, since you learn by doing. It also helps you understand error messages and how to fix typos, indent or syntax errors. I tend to miss colon's and have learned to watch more carefully when coding. The only complaint would be that I found the book a little pricey considering it was an ebook. I feel the publishers (not necessarily Amazon) are gouging the public by over pricing. I would have felt better buying the ebook directly from the author (eg self published through Amazon) knowing that he would get most of the profits instead of middle men overpricing, taking a large cut and leaving the author with a small fraction.
