Undoubtedly One Of The Best Self Improvent Books Of All Time

Truly an amazing book for those in a self discovery phase of their lives. This book is a super simple and quick read giving the illusion that it isn't filled with wisdom that will resonate with you for years to come. Nothing could be further from the truth. Beautifully written in a way that almost anyone can relate to, the book does an excellent job of opening your mind and helping you realize that wherever you are is okay. In the vein of many Buddhist texts, the idea is to be in the moment so that you can fully appreciate your life (gross oversimplification but you get the point) but instead of Dan Millman just preaching this to you, he tells a beautiful story through the eyes of a college gymnast who thinks he has it all figured out. This college gymnast happens upon a man named Socrates who very quickly informs him that he doesn't know anything. Socrates then goes on to teach him many lessons on happiness and how to be in life for real deep fulfillment and it is a story that may very well leave you in tears. The book is fantastic, just do yourself a favor and read it.

Dan is in college at the time and is also world champion gymnast athlete and one night when he could not sleep he wound up at a small all-night gas station. This is where he meets a man working the night shift who becomes his philosophical and spiritual mentor.

The unique and original approaches to learning about what is really important in life are the lessons Dan is taught in sometimes subtle and unusual ways. The numerous conversations and feedback between Dan and Socrates makes this 217 page soft cover an interesting read. I had heard about this book some time ago but did not read it until recently. There also was a movie made based upon this book.

This book is organized into three books. Book one covers “the winds of change.” Book two is about “the warrior’s training.” The final book (3) is about the final search and the gate opens. There is also information about the movie being made from the book.

Even though I enjoyed reading this book I have some disagreements with some of the esoteric approaches in this book; nevertheless, I felt it was good enough to give 5 stars.

I’ve waited too long to give this book a review. It is a book I have already read two times and will read again soon. More about mindset, and I love how the author gives you a journey as if it were you (well it was him) from being a “untamed” mind, into someone who has the discipline to “control their life and outlook”. So many of us are sitting back waiting for things to come to us, and complaining about our lives.

Wish more people would read this book, on a regular basis I think of myself in the shoes of the main character in the book and try to develop my mindset to be more in control and positive of the situation.

Enigmatic Martin

This is an "old" book - published in 1970 and now long since out of print. It is also one of the very best in illuminating one of the Framers of the constitution and in explaining the proceedings of the Convention of 1787. Even if your interest is less in Martin than in the counter-opinions of those subsequently called anti-federalists - this book is an excellent read. And, if you think of Mr. Jefferson as saintly - this perspective will tilt his halo a bit with the, seldom told, other side of the story in its well documented accounts of the Cresap and Chase and Burr controversies.

The co-authors Paul S. Clarkson & R. Samuel Jett are (or were?) Baltimore attorneys: they probe the life of the provocative Luther Martin (also an attorney) as lawyers would. Martin's childhood and youth fly past quickly - there is little of real interest for the legal focus. When finally Martin is accepted to the Bar - the story takes on intensity, sometimes testing for the lay reader, for the occasional definition of the "odd" legal term, or the reread of abstruse legal text.

The authors lapse occasionally into (what seems?) hyperbole when it comes to pride for their own state: "The General Court of his period was probably the greatest trial court in the history of the American judiciary" (pg. 59) and "Under the Maryland constitution of 1776 the senate was probably the most ultraconservative body of legislative Bourbons in American history" (pg. 68). And while examination of legal outcomes - sometimes even proceedings - is the vehicle for presenting Martin's accomplishments, philosophies & attitudes, the vehicle is by no means off-putting or obtuse to the lay reader... it works.

The chapters dealing with the Constitutional Convention of 1787 are simply the BEST that I have ever read, even including Amar's masterful America's Constitution: A Biography. They are written in advocacy of Luther Martin and the role that he played. They are nonetheless compelling if not convincing that historians have given short shrift to one of the most incisive members of that delegation. A motion put before the constitutional convention by Luther Martin became the supremacy clause within the constitution (Art. VI, � 2). In its final form it moved so far beyond Martin's intentions that he later disclaimed it in a 1788 letter to Oliver Elsworth. Nonetheless - Martin - the archetype Anti-Federelist - as "father" of the supremacy clause is high irony! The chapters (22-24) on Martin's defense of Aaron Burr at the infamous treason trial are detailed and vividly told. The selection of the jury, testimony of the witnesses and presentation of evidence (such as it was) are masterfully presented. All this generating acquittal against a force of contemporaneous popular opinion that is shown to be hugely stacked against Burr.

Luther Martin is minimized in modern historical accounts as a drunkard and "prolix" in his presentation. He may well have been, but the record is stacked with Mr. Madison's perspective and that of the "winners", the Federalists - no friends of Mr. Martin. (He did later become a "Federalist" - though largely in reaction to Jefferson's Democratic-Republican party.) This book is serious history, it requires the reader's attention. Sometimes it moves on feet of clay for its legalistic inspection, but even with that said, chapters 7-16 (the convention) are a 5-star account. The read will leave you with doubts about the eccentric Luther Martin's vices and will not fail to stimulate your interest in his virtues!

About the Author
Elia Kazan was born in 1909 in Istanbul. He graduated from Williams College and attended the Yale School of Drama before joining the Group Theatre. He was the founder of the Actors Studio, and he won three Tony Awards for direction (for All My Sons, Death of a Salesman, and J.B.) and two Academy Awards (for Gentleman’s Agreement and On the Waterfront), as well as an honorary Oscar in 1999 for lifetime achievement. He died in September 2003.

Amazing Book! - Both amazingly inspirational, passionate and at the same time very precise and rational

The Book is amazing! for a number of reasons: first of all the great author. Despite some controversy over 1952's affair Kazan remains one of the best American directors ever... Just like another great director Sidney Lumet comments on the book - reading it really feels like having a deep interesting conversation with the author, that alone is one hell of a rare treat for books of this type. It is amazing and very useful how Kazan treats material a play or a screenplay, his amazing quest for certainty and precision, how he breaks the material down to find a basic idea - a spine, and how he explains the importance of finding this spine and how all the rest of the things like acting, lighting and generally everything comes from and should be connected to this "Spine". The other amazingly important bit about the author and this book is that he is very critical first of all to himself. He would sit and watch a show in a theater and think and capture it's mistakes and then analyse those and if they lead to him the director he doesn't ignore it on the contrary he goes deeper and draws the exact conclusions why and how this or that mistake has been made and how he should avoid them in the future. He is very rational, adequate and precise but at the same time amazingly passionate, he works with actors knowing each of them amazingly well for what they really are and what they are capable of. In other words he explains and shows the enormous importance of good Casting. I came across this book by watching Francis Ford Coppola's interview where he mentions this book and how the approach of Kazan in treating the material helped him create his big notebook for Godfather. He states that this notebook was so dense and full of important details for each scene that he practically didn't need a script on the set. Coppola uses the same method as Kazan for example for the scene: what the scene is about?, what he wants to express with it?, how to express it the best way? and what are the risks? and etc. this structural approach to the material is very useful both for beginner filmmakers and professionals. Book doesn't have the setups and how to do recipes it has a lot more. It gives the most important ingredient of all on how to find, formulate and then express the general idea, It gives clues on how to find the inspiration and I guess that is much more important than any instructions. This book is amazingly inspirational and passionate and at the same time superbly precise and rational - I guess the unity of these elements underlines most the significance of this book and the significance of the body of work of this great visionary who has influenced a lot of great directors such as Nicholas Ray, Sindey Lumet, Martin Scorcese, Francis Ford Coppola and many more

Great for film lovers, and filmmakers!

Rarely has a book on film said so much in so little space. First, it is mostly Kazan's voice we hear. Secondly, the book is finely organized, offering editorial comments and questions,letters from Kazan countering with his lively answers to these and elaborating on his views, separate sections as director of stage and film (the book actually comes in two parts),and the most fascinating articles/speeches Kazan ever gave, as, for instance, an address by Kazan delivered ar Wesleyan University in 1973, which covers just about everything about directing under the sun. Kazan is a "no holds barred" commentator of his own work, relating his experiences in life and in film in sometimes scorching language, managing to be entertaing and completely outspoken. There are hidden treasures everywhere about filmmaking that will make the film buff and filmmaker alike salivate with pleasure. Not to forget here a foreward by John Lahr,a Preface by Martin Scorsese, and an illuminating Introduction by Robert Cornfield, which contains the best remarks on "method acting" I have ever seen. All in all, a good read, worth all the pennies you spend on it.

Book arrived in mint condition. An absolute must read for any actor (like myself) or director. Kazan's candid, surprisingly humorous, and thorough explanation of every production should be studied by everyone interested in the greatest period of American drama on stage and one of the greatest pioneering times for American actors. Actors will especially benefit from his advice and insight into the performance process as well. Study up kids!

About the Author
Jeffrey Jensen Arnett is a Research Professor in the Department of Psychology at Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts. He received his Ph.D. in developmental psychology in 1986 from the University of Virginia, and did three years of postdoctoral work at the University of Chicago. From 1992 to 1998, he was Associate Professor in the Department of Human Development and Family Studies at the University of Missouri, where he taught a 300-student life-span development course every semester. In the fall of 2005, he was a Fulbright Scholar at the University of Copenhagen in Denmark.

His primary scholarly interest for the past 20 years has been in emerging adulthood. He coined the term, and he has conducted research on emerging adults concerning a wide variety of topics, involving several different ethnic groups in American society. He is the Founding President and Executive Director of the Society for the Study of Emerging Adulthood (SSEA; www.ssea.org). From 2005 to 2014 he was the editor of the Journal of Adolescent Research (JAR), and currently he is on the Editorial Board of JAR and five other journals. He has published many theoretical and research papers on emerging adulthood in peer-reviewed journals, as well as the books Human Development: A Cultural Approach (2016), Adolescence and Emerging Adulthood: A Cultural Approach (2015), and Emerging Adulthood: The Winding Road from the Late Teens Through the Twenties (2015).

Ashley E. Maynard is Professor and Chair of the Department of Psychology at the University of Hawai’i at M noa, where she has been on the faculty since 2001. She received her Ph.D. in Psychology in 1999 from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and did two years of postdoctoral study in Anthropology and Cultural Psychology in the Department of Neuropsychiatry and Biobehavioral Sciences at UCLA. Ashley has taught approximately 4,000 students in courses ranging from Introductory Psychology to Lifespan Development at the graduate level.

Her primary research interest since 1995 has been the impact of cultural change at the macro level, such as economic and sociodemographic shifts, on socialization and cognition in childhood. She also studies the development of teaching in childhood and sibling interactions. She has worked with her students on research in Mexico, Costa Rica, and Hawai’i. She has won national awards for her research, including the James McKeen Cattell Award from the New York Academy of Sciences and the APA Division 7 (Developmental Psychology) Dissertation Award. She has published many articles on culture and human development in peer-reviewed journals, and in a volume she edited with Mary Martini, Learning in Cultural Context: Family, Peers, and School (2005).

About the Author
Christopher Rouff holds a PhD in Computer Science from the University of Southern California. In 2005 he won the Best Research Paper Award from the NASA Office of Safety and Mission Assurance (OSMA), Software Assurance Research Program (SARP); the Best Paper Award from the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, Information Systems Division (Code 580) and the Space Act Award for NASA patents. He is currently a technology manager at Lockheed Martin.

About the Author
Marc Delisle is a member of the MySQL Developers Guild – which regroups community developers – because of his involvement with phpMyAdmin. He started to contribute to this popular MySQL web interface in December 1998, when he made the first multi-language version. He has been actively involved with the phpMyAdmin project since May 2001 as a developer and project administrator. He has worked since 1980 at Coll�ge de Sherbrooke, Qu�bec, Canada, as an application programmer and network manager. He has also been teaching networking, security, Linux servers, and PHP/MySQL application development. In one of his classes, he was pleased to meet a phpMyAdmin user from Argentina.
