An Emotional Conclusion to a Must-Read Series
By Austine @ NovelKnight
How does someone review the most emotional, roller coaster ride of a series conclusion they've ever read? In truth? I'm not really sure but I have a lot of feels that I'm struggling to put into words.

I adored A Darker Shade of Magic when I first visited the four Londons of V.E. Schwab's world. It quickly made my list of must-read fantasies. Then came A Gathering of Shadows and all hell broke loose. So much happened and so fast that I was left in a daze upon finishing and forced to wait for what seemed like an eternity until A Conjuring of Light released.

Honestly, I was dreading the release a bit because it meant the end of the Shades of Magic series and I wasn't ready for that. I'm still not ready and I've already read it. So right, the book. Was it good?

Do you really need to ask me that?

I'll start by saying that while A Gathering of Shadows was crazy action and all sorts of things happening at once, A Conjuring of Light slowed things down a bit but not in a bad way. Loose ends needed to be tied up and I think of the three books, this was the most emotional both from the story perspective as well as reading it.

AGOS left off on a major cliffhanger that's quickly addressed at the beginning of ACOL but that's not the worst thing the gang has to deal with this time around. Where the book lacked some of the action of previous installments, it more than made up for it with the relationships between all the characters. Everyone has a part to play and are forced to make heartbreaking decisions that had me flying from one page to the next.

Goodness, this is hard without spoiling something from a previous book.

So the big bad from Black London has decided to take over a new world and while it's a battle of who will come out on top at the end of the day, there's a lot of backstory dropped into this one that you don't see in previous books. Holland, for example, gets a whole damn history written for him and I was internally bawling (just wait, the tears broke through by the end). He's a character that I loved to hate in ADSOM, then he began redeeming himself (marginally) in AGOS, and finally came around in ACOL.

Though he can't hold a candle to my ships. Last book we met Alucard and I fell in love with an unavailable "privateer" (I mean, Kell is my one true love so that's alright, I'll fight Lila). The sailor and Rhy needed a happy ending and I was screaming every few chapters because it was constantly under attack. There were moments I may have had a minor freak out. No big deal.

Those two had the biggest struggle of my ships. To be honest, I expected more with Lila and Kell but the two had that unspoken relationship where you know they're a thing but nothing is ever said. It comes through their actions. They did relatively well throughout the whole book, though had their respective personal struggles as well as balancing the dynamic of the entire group.

Somehow I've kept it together this far but just give me a moment. I have to talk about the ending.

The ending.

It's over.

First, every time I see the word Anoshe I start tearing up (and yes, that includes when I typed it). But it's nothing compared to when I reached that first conclusion of the story. You know, that moment when everything is (relatively) alright and what's coming up is the wrap-up, the conclusion to the conclusion.

I stopped reading, 17 pages to go. And I sat there, fighting the tears and the lump in my throat because somehow all those emotions snuck up on me. I don't cry very often, like ever really. And never over a book.

Almost ruined the pages with tears, y'all. Moved it just in time.

And so I picked up the book once more and I read those last 17 pages and closed it, completing the end of an extraordinary fantasy series. I have never had such a strong reaction to a series ending. Ever. And I'm not sure I will again.

Don't let these books go to the wayside. If you haven't started the series and decided to read this review anyway, I'm very confused but alright, now go read them! And if you're putting off ACOL... I understand. You'll likely never be ready for the end but know that you're not alone in that. And I don't think there's anything else I can truly say as my heart hurts too much to put those feelings in words. I'll just leave you with one that, if it holds no meaning now, it soon will.

Anoshe.

definitely better than book two for me, but not quite as good as book one
By Sneaky Burrito
I loved the first book in this series and I was less than enthusiastic about book two. My main problem with book two was the magic tournament. I just wasn't interested in this as a major event in the book; instead, the events happening behind the scenes, so to speak, were much more interesting. Thus, I was still excited to read this novel, book three. Because there can't be TWO magic tournaments in one series, right?

And this was definitely better than book two, though, at least to me, probably not as good as book one. If you are a fan of the series, definitely read it. If you were put off by book two, I'd still encourage you to read this one -- it is much better, plus you get some resolution. If you haven't started the series at all, go back to book one. This won't make the least bit of sense without it. (Also there are minor spoilers for books one and two here.)

There aren't really any new characters introduced here. All the major players were in books one and two. They may have had minor roles in the previous books (e.g., some sailors) but they are familiar faces. (I kind of think the second book, in addition to having the magic tournament, was an excuse to introduce a bunch of minor players for a side-plot that occurs near the end of this book.) Anyway, our main characters are Kell, an Antari (basically a top-level magic user) who has been adopted into the royal family of Arnes (where a parallel London exists), Lila, a thief from this book's equivalent of our world, Rhy, Kell's adoptive brother, Holland, Kell's Antari nemesis from yet another parallel London, and Alucard, a noble from Arnes who has been a mentor to Lila, an adversary to Kell, and a lover to Rhy.

I'll be honest, I didn't like Holland in the previous books. I think we weren't supposed to. We find out a lot more about him, about what's been driving him, here, and he becomes much more sympathetic. Holland's backstory is a good way to work in character development in a book with no new characters. (We also get a little background on Rhy's parents, as they get a few POV scenes. I found it difficult to identify with Emira, Rhy's mother, but Maxim, his father, was a bit easier to understand. I am going to have to take these bits about them and go back and think about their parts in books one and two now, to see if their actions make more sense. It is a little odd placing these bits of information here, near the end of the series, with Rhy really coming into his own. But if you like character studies, there is something for you here.)

I'm going to take a detour here and talk about what I didn't like. There were a couple of mysteries hinted at in earlier volumes that weren't resolved to my satisfaction. We learned earlier on that Lila was missing an eye and had a glass eye, but we never find out the circumstances surrounding the loss of her eye. We can speculate based on what we find out about her abilities in this book, but that is not quite the same as getting actual answers. Also, Kell wonders a lot about his past in the previous books; even his name comes from initials carved into his arm (KL). The speculation about Kell's past is at its highest point when he is on the outs with the royal family in Arnes in book two, but he gets a little more information here and then just kind of drops it. It's almost like the author remembered she hadn't handled this at the last minute and inserted the bit where he is given key information at the last minute. It's not really believable to me that someone who spent all of book two feeling put out that he had basically been used as a possession by his adoptive family, never allowed to leave the city, etc., suddenly accepts the Arnesian royals and forgets about everything else. In the scope of things, I guess these are minor, but they stand out to me, nonetheless.

Anyway, another thing I didn't care for was the main antagonist (Osaron). Although he does have some flaws that are, of course, exploited by the good guys, he is just too one-dimensional for me. He is a creature of magic and although it is tempting to read human motivations in him, he doesn't really have human characteristics. (On the other hand, I generally like the strategies the "good guys" come up with to deal with him. There are some successes -- including by members of the royal guard, priests, and other everyday people, not just the powerful main protagonists. But there are also some failures.)

One final complaint: at multiple points in the book, an object that was desperately needed by the characters to further the plot was mentioned. Once, it was a map. Another time, it was a particular artifact (the name of which escapes me). The map, at least, had been mentioned going all the way back to book one, though Lila, to whom it used to belong, didn't know what its purpose was. But in any case, each time the existence of such an object was mentioned, some character knew exactly where to find one. (One could make a similar argument about some rings found by Kell at the equivalent of a magic flea market. Although in that instance, he didn't even know what he needed and it still fell into his lap.)

What I did like: I was just more interested in reading this book than book two. I got through it a lot faster, chose to read instead of doing other things, etc. That is nearly always a good sign for me. Events surrounding Holland kept me guessing, too. Holland was actually a big strength for me in this book. He's a tragic character, but he and Kell are also stand-ins for their respective societies' treatment of magic and Antari and the struggle to survive. Holland knows more but he had to know more to get by. He's broken inside by what he's had to do, but he retains a bit of the idealism or optimism of his past.

A lot more was at stake in this book than just bragging rights for a tournament winner, and that was also appreciated. Plus, we get to see a little more of the world here. (What we see fits nicely with what we already know about Arnes and the surrounding lands and sea.) Despite some heroic efforts, everyone takes losses.

Other aspects of the book -- the writing style, the worldbuilding, etc. -- fit right in with everything developed in the previous two volumes. There are a few made-up words, but they generally fall under two categories (1) describing things that don't exist in our world or (2) activate spells (e.g., for the Antari to travel), so these don't bother me overly much. Other than that, honestly, the writing is not so noticeable. It simply fades to the background as it does its job of telling the story.

Even though I had a lot of issues with this book, I'm inclined to go easy on it as far as a star rating goes. I feel that it does need more stars than I gave book two, but not as many as I gave book one, and that leaves a 4. This is probably more of a 3.5 for me, but I'll round up.

Perfect conclusion for the series
By Katherine
What an incredibly satisfying end to the series. I naturally had high expectations for this book after having loved the previous two books, but even still, this book surpassed my expectations. I cried throughout the final section of the book, not necessarily because of the actual events happening on the page, but because it was so emotionally fulfilling and felt like such a satisfying conclusion to everything. Everything I could have hoped for in a final book.

Dispensationalism before Darby: Seventeenth-Century and Eighteenth-Century English Apocalypticism, by William C. Watson

For years, critics of premillennialism have argued that John Nelson Darby was the source of the doctrine of the rapture and dispensationalism. Building upon years of research in seventeenth-century and eighteenth-century English theological writings, William Watson argues that dispensationalism and the ideas associated with it were long part of British theological discourse. Drawing upon hundreds of early printed English books and years of archival study in primary sources and British libraries, Watson demonstrates that Darby’s thought was neither aberrant nor original. To the contrary, he was following a long line of British clergy who anticipated the restoration of Jews to a national homeland and the imminent return of Jesus Christ.

The straw-man that Darby invented dispensationalism will disappear in 20 years
By Michael H.
Fantastic, groundbreaking, vastly important work!! Watson sheds a new light on the correct origins of many elements of dispensationalism that pre-date John Nelson Darby. The straw-man that Darby invented dispensationalism will disappear in 20 years. Nearly every theology textbook will have to be revised due to Dr. Watson's research. I had the pleasure of hearing him lecture on this topic recently and was impressed. I'm still reading the book, but it is groundbreaking!

Serious students of eschatology need to read this
By David Anderson
William Watson provides a wonderful resource full primary evidence that futuristic premillennialism does not originate with Darby. The book offers a panoply of source after source making the same case--that Darbys system was nothing new. Most interesting were the quotes from many English Puritans and a good number of Westminster divines who held firmly to a futuristic plan for the people (and nation) of Israel. Watson's book makes a very strong case as well as a rebuttal to the dismissive theological urban legend that dispensationalism is solely the brainchild of Darby. Serious students of eschatology will benefit from this work.

God's Timing
By Greenstone
Dispensationalism deals with God's timing of events in the world. Author Dr. William C. Watson's work, ergo, refines the order upon which man's perception of God's timeline was advancing in the two centuries before John Nelson Darby.

Darby is the man erroneously credited by others, not himself, with initiating the teaching of the imminent, or any moment, Rapture.

"Dispensationalism Before Darby" provides a crucial compendium of documented 17th and 18th century sources to immolate the proposed error that Darby was responsible for concocting the imminent Rapture doctrine in the early 19th century.

Establishing a veritable literary fusillade of testimony supporting the teaching of the imminent Rapture doctrine during the 17th and 18th centuries, obviously pre-dating John Nelson Darby, this weighty tome offers hours of detailed, pleasurable reading for all concerned.

Truly, Nelson is credited with formulating "classical dispensationalism" by scholars such as Dr. Ed Hindson, Dean & Distinguished Professor of Religion, School of Religion, Liberty University.

However, Hindson declares, "...Watson plows new ground in researching the history of eschatological thought prior to the nineteenth century."

Certainly, some few Bible Scholars familiar with Matthew Henry, publishing his famed commentary a century before Darby, are aware that Henry's commentary records Matthew's own support of the imminent Rapture stance. Strangely, most of those allowing Henry's commentary to gather dust on their overladen library shelves do not.

Thus, importantly, this volume eradicates the claim that Darby inspired the teaching.

Significantly, this line of thought is highlighted when one considers the Rapture, by all of these witnesses from the centuries leading up to Darby, was at that time viewed as 'imminent' !

For initial proclamations of the imminent Rapture in the 1st century Church, you are referred to "Blast Off Rapiemur."

Well done, Dr. Watson !!!

Till the Shout!

Ginger: My Story, by Ginger Rogers

She was born Virginia Katherine McMath, but the world would come to know her—and love her—as Ginger Rogers: Broadway star, Academy Award-winning actress, and the ultimate on-screen dancing partner of the inimitable Fred Astaire. In Ginger: My Story, the legendary entertainer shares the triumphs of a remarkable career that began when she won a Texas dancing contest at age fourteen; the joys and heartbreaks of her five marriages; her relationships with some of Hollywood's major leading men, including Cary Grant, Jimmy Stewart, and damaged daredevil billionaire Howard Hughes; and the strength of her religious convictions that got her through thick and thin.

Lavishly illustrated with rare photographs from the author's personal collection, Ginger is an enthralling, behind-the-scenes tour of Hollywood life during the Golden Age of movies by one of its most enduring stars.

From Publishers Weekly
Winning a dance contest in Texas launched the 14-year-old Virginia Katherine McMath on her acting career and eventful personal life, episodes, emotions and dialogue from which she recreates here in exhaustive detail. Now 79, this devout Christian Scientist recalls her early vaudeville days in a determinedly upbeat tone, as well as her stage and film hits, including the 10 musicals-- Top Hat , Swing Time , etc.--in which she and Fred Astaire co-starred. Also discussed is Rogers's Oscar-winning Kitty Foyle and acclaimed roles in Hello Dolly and Mame . The author brightens an uninspired narrative style with backstage and Hollywood anecdotes and names, and tells of her five husbands--and of her romances with the likes of Cary Grant, Jimmy Stewart and Howard Hughes. She also encountered political figures--from U.S. presidents to the shah of Iran and Juan Peron. Recommended for fans who cherish every scrap of trivia about their idol. Photos not seen by PW.

From Library Journal
Rogers is a consummate storyteller in addition to being an entertainment legend. In this autobiography, she chronicles her rise to stardom and describes her various dramatic and musical film roles. She also reviews her five marriages and various romances, while charmingly setting the record straight on her partnership with Fred Astaire. Although candid in her revelations, she respects the people and events that touched her--there is no tabloid gossip here. The positive influence of her mother, Lela, and open testimony to a deep religious faith figure strongly in her life's story, which is rich in detail and humor. Rogers shines through as a vivacious, talented, and self-confident individual with an earthy response to her amazing career. This delightful chronicle of 50 years in entertainment is refined, well-written fun. Recommended for circulating libraries. Previewed in Prepub Alert, LJ 6/15/91.

From Kirkus Reviews
Serviceable autobiography of the dancer-comedienne-leading lady, now 80. Rogers does an always absorbing job of recreating her legendary career without ever quite capturing the voice we all remember from her films. As a young comedienne, she often gave a mischievous, sassy edge to her roles, coming on fast and smart. The woman who writes this book, however, has been a nondrinking, largely nonsmoking Christian Scientist all her adult life--not the opinionated, raspy personality the ``Ginger'' implies. Rogers has been the victim of husbands given to partying, drink, and philandering rather than a woman chasing her own satisfactions. Born Virginia McMath in Independence, Missouri, she was stage- struck early, winning dance contests and then joining the vaudeville circuits at 14; luckily, she had a wise mother who guided her professionally for much of her life while allowing Rogers to make her own mistakes romantically. They parted company briefly when, at 17, Rogers married Jack Culpepper, 29, who turned out to be a drunk. At 19, the performer was the toast of Broadway, starring in Florenz Ziegfeld's production of George and Ira Gershwin's Girl Crazy and off on a rocket that took her through 19 films before Flying Down to Rio teamed her with Fred Astaire. She doesn't mention her wit for stealing scenes in those earlier films but makes clear that she was an accomplished artist with strong film presence even before her teaming with Astaire. Rogers describes the making of each of the team's musicals, her hard times with director Mark Sandrich (Top Hat), love for George Stevens (Swing Time, her favorite--but really not the team's best film, which is Roberta). Marriage to her idol Lew Ayres dissolved after six years, an on-and-off romance with Cary Grant fizzled. Keeps you rapt, mostly. High point: the Oscar for Kitty Foyle. In Her Own Words
By R. Bono
I found this book to be delightful. I'm not taken aback by the use of the first person pronoun, or the comments on Christian Science, or her bursts of enthusiasm that come through from many years ago. In fact, they enhance understanding of this ebullient and hard-working personality. She's open about her flaws and imperfections...and in fact, seems eager to communicate them to the public....who, seeing her in more than a few transcendentally beautiful films, had come to expect the same from her in person. She demonstrates her down-home humanity and her joy of life many times over...even as she attempts to set the record straight, on all the so many erroneous things, that were said about her over the years.

She's quiet on certain (but not all) personal things...i.e., between husband and wife....and I'm glad she had the good taste NOT to let us in on the things that are none of our business. She was more of a private person...like Fred...than many would have supposed. She was active socially at different parts of her life, but always preferred the small gathering, or the small party, with friends.

Some viewed her as an "ultra-conservative". But here too, she sets the record straight. She only supported her mother's right to speak out regarding her opinions on left influence of some Hollywood script writers. It should be noted however, that this was at the very moment when the theft of American atom bomb secrets led to an exact copy, being detonated by Mr. Stalin. Compare Ginger's "sin" to Kate Hepburn's melodramatic and simplistic "I am a communist" speech in their support. I'm not disparaging Kate at all, but truly, which was worse?

She wasn't so "ultra-conservative" not to have met and admired Democrats FDR, Elinor Roosevelt, Harry Truman (who had a day for her in Independence, Missouri), and Jimmy Carter. She wasn't so "ultra-conservative" to have broken her engagement with a cheating Howard Hughes, and turned away from a life of wealth and luxury. She wasn't so "ultra-conservative" not to have married a pacifist, and to have considered as her favorite film, Hollywood's first anti-war movie: "All Quiet on the Western Front", starring her future husband Lew Ayres. She wasn't so "ultra conservative" not to have been a fighter for her own rights, and the rights of actresses. And in fact, it should be noted that her friend and colleague, Ronald Reagan, with whom, in 1950, she did the anti Klu Klux Klan film "Storm Warning", helped to end the cold war, with Mickhail Gorbachev...whom HE befriended.

Underlying her great talent, charm, personality, versatility, and good looks, she had a strength of character, which earned her every bit of her many accolades. Yes, she admittedly and not surprisingly, also made mistakes, both professional and personal...but...and this is key to understanding her...bounced back every time. She didn't live in a dream world of her brilliant past career...but lived in the moment...even if that moment was not up to her highest past standards...as is almost always inevitable in late career.

In my opinion, this did not diminish her one iota. As Billy Wilder said..."We are all as good as the best things we've done." If this is the standard, and I think it is, then Ginger Rogers must be ranked very highly indeed. Her dance musicals, her dramatic acting, and her skills as a first rate comedienne, her stage musicals, all place her in the category of a classic Hollywood legend.

She was a hard working actress, who loved her audiences; quietly took care of her family and charities; transcended her mid-West background to become a woman of the world; and who never took out a loan in her life. Fred Astaire had a three word description of her spunk. Fred simply said: "She had guts.". That's Ginger Rogers. I recognize the quality of her life....and I recommend this book highly.

A Book to Use
By Wally Bock
This is a book to use, not a book to read.

Sam Horn tells you early on that the book has two purposes. It will help you quickly capture interest and it will help you "break out, not blend in." But that will happen only if you pick a project or idea and then apply the suggestions in the book to improving it and creating a message with POP.

POP stands for Purposeful, Original and Pithy. The book is organized around those three standards.

First comes Purposeful. To help you boil your idea down to its essence the author asks you to answer the 9W questions about it. Answering those questions give you a foundation to build on.

In fact, you'll find yourself going back to those nine questions and your answers time and again. You'll probably change some of your answers. That's a very good thing.

The second, and largest main section helps you make your communication Original. The ideas here will help you turn your idea around so you can see it from the others side and massage it into different forms. You'll learn about the power of alliteration, doing your own take on common sayings, advertising slogans and pop culture phrases.

The third section has ideas for helping you be Pithy. The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines "pithy" as: "having substance and point - tersely cogent." If it's short and carries a big message, it's pithy.

This was the most helpful section for me. You'll learn how to use alliteration, rhythm and rhyme to make your statement more powerful and more memorable. I've seen all this before, but never in a single place.

The book closes with "Seven Secrets to Keep Their Interest Once You've Got It." This seems to me like a bunch of good ideas that were too good to leave out, but didn't fit anywhere else.

I got incredible value by working through the exercises as I went. As advertised, they helped me craft a POP statement. More importantly, for me, this was a powerful exercise in understanding my business offering and what is unique about it.

I recommend this book to you if you want to craft POP statements that present you or your business or idea to others. I also recommend it if you want exercises that will help you think creatively about what you do.

I've been a professional speaker and writer now for over a quarter century. I found help and ideas here that will help me tell my story and the story of my business more effectively. So will you.

Delightfully delicious
By Erik Eisel
Getting ready for a trip and looking for a light, fun read, I picked up Sam's book off of the B&N table. What a delightful book this is! Sam has much to say about branding, marketing and selling "You." Whether she believes that the people we're selling to don't have much time, or they don't have a long attention span, I don't know. But, she emphasizes the first impression, the first 30 seconds of a conversation, the first "hook." So, her book is a cornucupia of tips and tricks to "hook" them before you say "hello." I will recommend this book to my "Toastmasters" group, where a lot of great speeches are given, but not much thought is given to creative titles or creative intros. If you give speeches, write short articles or write a blog, get this book immediately.

THIS IS AN ABSOLUTE MUST BUY BOOK!
By Ev Nucci
Most business books promise the reader millions in new found wealth and fail to deliver even a crusty cold pizza.

Horn, on the other hand, has given the world a refreshingly brilliant book in POP without one platitude.

Horn teaches you how to BRAND. How to stand out from the crowd in every way....how to be unique in your industry, your profession and your message.

She educates you. Talent is not enough in today's competitive environment. And she is right. How many talented people do you know?

As Horn says in her book, "We are one of many." So she edifies ways to stand out from the crowd...concepts you would never think of that are BRILLIANT. At least I never thought of them before.

She spends time on how to craft unique slogans, capture conversational catch phrases, how to be relevant. Think about all the information available to us today. With our busy lives what information do we actually remember? What was it about Freakanomics or Jerry Maquire that kept people talking? Horn teaches you to employ the techniques from both---and in the process how you can go from ordinary to EXTRAORDINARY.

If this book was $250.00 it would be a steal. Horn is a brilliant sage. A master at knowing what it takes to succeed in today's global competitive marketplace!
