Readings, resources, and exercises throughout the book enhance the skills presented in the 14 chapters. The section on Building Session Goals and Strategies (BSGS) is a new take on the Client Individualized Treatment Plan, but with a less confusing presentation of session goals and techniques. Clear, concise, and useful!

This is a great book for anyone looking to add structure and logic to their addiction counseling practice. The book is well written and well organized. The language is easy to understand, and the concepts are useful. I particularly found the section on BSGS (Building Session Goals and Strategies) helpful. Dr. Y. takes an organized and thoughtful approach to what is often a chaotic and drama filled discipline. This a great book if you are looking to take a proactive and not reactive approach to counseling.

A book every future counselor should have

This book will help you learn how to interact with clients, families and co-workers in the field of substance abuse. At the end of each chapter there are helpful exercises to complete (with or without a partner) to help you get a better understanding of the topic and how to deal with a client who is at different stages of recovery or treatment. Another great feature is that it is small and light but compact with useful, professional information.
