About the Author
Fred Cooksey has been teaching college English for more than fifteen years. For the last ten years he has been at Holyoke Community College in Holyoke, Massachusetts, where he teaches composition, literature, creative nonfiction, and journalism. He has taught in private liberal arts colleges, universities, and prisons. He has a B.A. in Philosophy from George Mason University, an M.A. in English, also from GMU, and an M.F.A. in Creative Writing from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. He lives in Easthampton, Massachusetts.

Using Quick & Dirty

Quick & Dirty is a terrific book!
I've used Fred Cooksey's book in six English 101 classes at Holyoke Community College. The course teaches students to write college papers in any discipline. Quick & Dirty completely replaces the $60 style manual that I had used for years. While the style manual contains more information, I was pleased to discover that Q & D contains all of the information I was using from the larger book.
Most importantly, students read and understand Q & D. They like reading it. Some of the comments on the back cover are from my students. (I can tell by the typos). From the first chapter where Dr. Cooksey presents "College Survival, or What Not to Do in Your Classes," students feel that they are conversing with someone who knows what he's talking about and knows how to explain it. Because Dr. Cooksey writes in the first person, students feel that they are working with a teacher instead of looking up rules.
And the price is terrific. $12! On the first day of class, an instructor has a leg up with students because the book for his or her class is more than reasonably priced. In my opinion, it's worth the price of admission just to see whether this book will fill your bill.

This book helped give a skeleton overview of what is expected in the first year of college, and outlined the foundations of a good paper. I thought I had a good education in High school, but I quickly realized that it didn't prepare me for College writing. This book helped give me a foundation so that I could deliver a technically good paper and helped me find a ton of resources. With out this book I would have been far behind in class and it reduced the learning curve of my first year to a manageable level so I was able to maintain a 3.8 GPA
