First Hand Home Truths About International Trade

I found this book to be an easy rewarding read. The author has travelled to a handful of representative poor / developing countries and successfully managed to find and convey some first hand snippets of their reality back to my comfortable existence.

This book would be very accessible for the non-economist reader, as it confines itself to mostly just reporting reality, and does not veer into the theories and complex economic debates surrounding the subject. This could be seen as a weakness, but my opinion is that there are other books for the theory, and this provides a valuable complement to a mixed reading diet.

Most of the issues it raised did not surprise me, but just confirmed my worst views about the inequalities of the world trading system. However there were some interesting points which are typical of the anomalies and counter intuitive things you find when you actually visit a place rather than theorise from a distance. For example I did not know that for many western companies that show the "fair trade" label on their products, the cost to them is presently small, because the world price for the commodity in question is currently higher than the floor price set by the fair trade organisation. Also he explains that for Afghan farmers, it can prove easier to sell their produce of poppies (narcotics) than other produce because the produce from poppies is collected from them rather than them having to pay bribes on the way to the local market with other goods. I also found it interesting to know some first hand trivia, like how much Chinese workers actually earn, and how many hours they work. In different parts of the book he also shows what corruption is like experienced first hand, and even the ineptitude of native and international organisations who swallow up money but do not generate long term results.

This book also highlights the fact that modern international trade is a fractured and out sourced affair, with often convenient firewalls of distance and ignorance separating the brands we are encouraged to love from the grim reality of the poor country worker. Our favourite brands and their lofty claims of moral conduct are kept at a hygienic distance from the local companies or middle men who operate in these competitive, compromising markets.

One of the main conclusions of this book is that certain individuals and companies have shown that it is possible to be both competitive and profitable, while also doing right by these workers in the poor and developing countries. It is also in parts an optimistic conclusion in that the author believes corporate responsibility and consumer pressure is a growing trend in business and that consumers and participants in international trade are becoming more informed due to technology. On the whole the conclusions, like the rest of the book is based on observing a few examples where this is the case, and not arrived at through a theory or policy route. Perhaps a bit fluffy and vague, but valid none the less.

However this trend in western countries is contrasted with the lower progressive standards exhibited by Chinese business, who behave more like we used to behave in the time of our colonial exploits. This is the less optimistic angle, as although many brand names may be becoming more aware, there is still the problem of the long complex supply chain to cloud the issues and dilute the corporate responsibility.

How fair is "fair" trade really?

If you've ever picked up an ethically labeled product at your local supermarket you probably did so for two reasons - you like the taste of the product and you feel reassured that local laborers are provided with a fair pay and acceptable working conditions. The important question would be - is this really so?
In Unfair Trade economist Conor Woodman presents a snapshot of what life is like for some of the world's poorest people trying to make a living by supplying our needs. From Nicaragua and Congo, to China and Tanzania, from coffee and tea to cotton and rubber, the author presents a collection of truly eyeopening case studies, letting the voices of those be heard who are supposedly treated "fair". Yet the emphasis is not just on the working conditions, but also on the double standards and moral compromise culminating in the shocking contrast of ethical labeling as marketing tool vs how things really are at the other end of that label. As much as those certifications don't always equal fairness, no such labels don't necessarily translate into unfairness, sometimes quite the contrary.
Written in a conversational tone, this is a comprehensible study that presents a brief yet revealing introduction to the topic. While the book isn't intended to be an exhaustive look at big businesses and their marketing tools, the ethical labeling of products itself would have deserved more exploration in my opinion.
In short: An insightful glimpse on just how fair "fair" trade really is!

detailed insider information - a must read

this is a really good book and definitely worth reading! i incidently bought it at the airport, but couldn't stop reading even back home. the fact he really travelled to all these countries and made a first-hand investigation represents a great benefit for the reader. although I understand a lot about economics and have a degree in social service, i never imaginen the bad side of fair trade to have such a big impact. this book is a must read!

With All For All is popular historical biography at its best – well-researched, comprehensive, vividly written, fast-paced and reliable in its conclusions and judgments. Darren Baker gives us not only a complex and fully human (and therefore, flawed) “hero” in Simon de Montfort, but a wonderfully depicted “adversary” in Henry III, shown here in a much liveliver fashion than is usual. The tone is that of a friendly tour guide to a remarkably murky period of English history, complete with a very user friendly “Cast of Characters” and “Timeline.” I loved it!

It is a pretty interesting site that features many heralded scientists as well ...

The misleading title suggests that the reader will find a late model discussion from the online forum edge.org that Brockman, the editor runs. It is a pretty interesting site that features many heralded scientists as well as introducing new ones. They are often filmed in discussions informally and on topics sure to entertain and inform the viewer. It is noticeably superior to the formulaic “Ted Talks”. I have never seen Malcolm Gladwell included in discussions on this site. I take some comfort in this.

However this book with a copyright of 2016 features discussions and articles that are about 10 years old. The concept of CRISPR which fills scientific publications immensely these days, is not mentioned for instance. There is some discussion of genetic engineering but not depth on the subject. Many of the 18 chapters I had either read or viewed already.

The cover of the book includes names of various scientists that have appeared on edge.org but are not contributors to the book. Over all I think highly of edge.org but like any product, we cannot like everything. The compilation that Brockman put together follows that understanding.

None the less and complaints aside, it was pretty good reading. I want my thoughts to be provoked and this compendium satisfied that. Several of the contributors I have grown weary of over the last few years. The ego of Craig Venter has been irritating to me but he was there for many pages and though I read or saw much of what he said already, I did not find his ideas annoying but rather food for thought. Likewise Freeman Dyson’s prickliness about climate change has rubbed me the wrong way but I found his single chapter and contribution to another to be likewise interesting reading. Finally the futurist Ray Kurzweil has not convinced me that soon we will all have IQs of 175 and we will live to be 175 too. However, I found his part of the discussion on Biocomputation to be insightful and provide fuel for future research.

The intentions of Brockman’s choice of articles was to better describe evolution and while reading the book I kept thinking of the difference between the scientifically shunned notion of teleology and juxtaposed it with teleonomy. There is no design to evolutionary changes. Evolution does not involve a plan towards an ideal state it just keeps us animals fed and allows us to breed.

Richard Prum’s article about duck sex really got me thinking about why certain features of animal physiology and behavior have come to be. No details will be given away from this quarter but Prum writes about the uniqueness in mallards and leads the reader to think about how and why things develop. Teleonomy was the biggest take away I got from this book.

There you have it. Eighteen articles that included around twenty five contributors are all laid out to give readers some food for thought. Have at it.

A DAMN GOOD BOOK!

I have loved this book since I was a child and it remains one of my favorites today.

The protagonist is a bright, articulate boy named Byron. He lives with his almost nonexistent mother and his adopted brother, Mark. An accomplished car thief ("nothing to hot wiring," according to him) and lover of fights, Mark is bad news. Byron describes him in an almost feral way; Mark had leonine coloring and features and his most outstanding feature is his amber colored eyes. Being with Mark is like a roller-coaster ride. Byron enjoys the excitement that living on the edge with Mark can bring.

The characters are sharp and richly drawn as is the Oklahoma town of the mid-1960s where the story takes place. One gets a strong, compelling sense of the characters and the dividing line in their immediate community. The "Greasers," so called because of their love for Elvis and tendency to use hair grease are looked down upon because they live on the "wrong side of the tracks," the east side of town. The Socs, (short for "Socialites") on the other hand are their affluent West Side counterparts. Byron falls hard for a socially mobile girl and takes her little brother, nicknamed M&M under his wing. The girl later ends up dating Byron's friend, the weirdly named Ponyboy who is in Byron's social circle.

The kids in this work, as in all of S. E. Hinton's works are highly independent. Adult characters are peripheral at best. The story is really about the young people in the Oklahoma community and their issues, confrontations and interactions. S. E. Hinton's books during this time period tend to be juvenocracies, that is ruled by youth.

Guns, drugs and violence are all part of the story. The conflict between the Socs and the Greasers is like "West Side Story" with bite, punch and gritty attitude. I love it!

S. E. Hinton is a highly gifted writer. She has a real gift for voice, place and character development. This work is very compelling and will leave you thinking about the characters and the various fates they meet long after you turn the last page.

A Powerful Story of Difficult Life Decisions

This is a powerful book that is excellently written. It tells of a teenager who is finding himself and must make decisions that ruin friendships and effect his life. Throughout this boy's maturing, many characters are introduced. The characters almost come alive, they are so real.
Toward the end of the book, I found myself in tears as the boy makes a necesary decision that SEEMS right, that appears to be the moral decision, but the outcome doesn't seem fitting and it made me wonder whether he made the right choice, whether that was the right decision.
This book is very life-like, very real. S.E. Hinton is my favorite author and she writes about what she knows; thus, the situations are easy to relate to. Infact, without even meaning to, I found myself relating to the story, comparing it to my life. The knowledge I received from this book will help me make decisions as I get older. If you are a young adult searching for who you are, or someone trying to make the right decisions in life, you need to read this book! It makes you think and ask yourself, "What is the right choice? What did this boy do wrong?" Apply it to your life and learn from the lesson, almost hidden, in this book

A Great Boy by S.E. Hinton

In the book, That was Than This is Now by S.E. Hinton, a young boy goes on his path to maturity while his best friend is still acting like a tough greaser. Like many of S.E. Hinton's books this takes place in a time of gangs and hippies. After the socs and the greasers' war, Bryon and his best friend Mark are enjoying life by being to able to do whatever they want. Mark was brought into Bryon's family after his parents killed each other. Their mother does not care what they do as long as they don't get themselves killed. Him and Bryon have been best friends since they were little kids mixed up in the greasers. They hang out in a bar, hustle complete strangers in pool and go to the drug store with M&M, who is a hippie. Due to a turn in events these three, and M&M's sister, Cathy, get into a dilemma where their decisions can determine the rest of their lives.
This book that S.E. Hinton wrote is a lot like many others he wrote, such as Taming the Star Runner, Tex, and Rumble Fish. It takes place in the mind of a young boy going through tough times by living on the streets. This book's time period is probably two years after The Outsiders, but in this book, unlike The Outsiders, the characters are different. There is still Ponyboy Curtis, but that is the only character from The Outsiders. S.E. Hinton has written many good books for young readers and this book is no exception. I really enjoyed reading this book and recommend this book for all young readers.

Great material, but...

I think this book does a wonderful job taking readers through biological, cognitive, and relationship changes during adolescence. I was really impressed by the inclusion of the latest research modifying Piaget's theories. I agree with other users saying this book was repetitive, but sometimes the repetition was the topic as viewed from different perspectives (ex: Baumrind's authoritative parenting and how it applies to education-teaching, education-administrative policies, education-poverty-stricken neighborhoods, education-self esteem issues, education-hormonal changes, etc.).

I would have given it four stars, except that the author tends to loose objectivity when discussing hot-button topics such as homosexuality, abortion, and contraception. Otherwise, a very enjoyable book!

Good Book

This book was needed for one of my classes to become a high school teacher. It has useful information and is a good reference for parents or teachers. The author does really well in the first few chapters, but I lost some interest in the middle/late chapters. I still read the book, for my class, but the most helpful information is in the first few chapters.

Worth it for this textbook

My professor required this text for Adolescent Psychology and drew almost directly from the sections for quizes/exams. The chapters were really thorough and explained concepts and terms in bold with mini glossary-style definitions when necessary. The photos with captions were supplemental to the chapters. It's nice to have a required book to read that is actually written in an interesting way and keeps you engaged in the reading.
