About the Author

A comprehensive, up-to-date look at genetic modification

I enjoyed this book because it is an up-to-date look at genetic modification. It explains all the major methods including zinc finger technology, TALENS and CRISPR-Cas9. However, a prior knowledge of biology is required to understand a lot of what author Jim Kozubek discusses. His discussions are comprehensive and he gets a lot of his materials through interviews. This is very interesting but some of the quotes are so long I forgot who he was interviewing. Sometimes he goes into too much detail and I would see the trees, not the forest. Kozubek also takes several detours that detract from the book. His discussion of Chomsky was incomprehensible and his discussion of Mary Shelley was interesting but largely irrelevant. His dives into philosophy were equally unappealing. However his discussions of the potential for gene editing and the ethical and legal implications were very good. Overall, despite the faults, I can recommend this book to anyone with a background in biology who wants to learn more about the subject.

Basics and Beyond!

I bought this book as a supplement to the textbook being used in our classroom (Fabrics for Interiors). The primary text is loaded with full-color pictures but does not really explain the details of fabric choice and application the way Nielsen does in Interior Textiles. A full third of Nielson's book is dedicated to historical styles and how fabric contributed to them, which is not covered in our primary text at all. In addition, Wiley's web site has an area dedicated to additional companion resources. While it does not appear to be fully populated yet, I look forward to using the book and the site constantly through the remainder of my education and going forward into my career in interior design.

This textbook is the best. It is very readable and can be easily understood. There is not any doubt that the author knows the subject at hand very well and presented it in a manner that is understandable, and makes the textbook enjoyable to read.

A Perfect Book on a Lesser Known Subject

There have been an icredible amount of studies of immigrants and immigration patterns during the Antebellum period and Civil War period but most of them focus only on the people who had come westward such as the Irish and the Germans. Very little is ever studied about the immigration from the east. Now, thanks to the National Park Service, a book has recently come out concerning the Asians and Pacific Islanders who fought during the Civil War. Not only does this book deal with their actions during the war, but gives glimpses into the lives of the people before and after the conflict and other aspects about their immigration which is not usually covered. What is produced here is a book that not only informs but educates the masses about a lesser known aspect of the people who fought this horrible war.

Carol A. Shivley is the editor of this work about the many Asians and Pacific Islanders who fought in the Civil War. Among the contributors of this work are Dr. Gary Y. Okihiro, Ruthanne Lum McCunn, Ted Alexander, Dr. Justin W. Vance, Anita Manning and Terry Foenander. Among the contributors were many other experts on the subject of Asian Americans in the Civil War including Jack Kuo Wei Tchen, Steve Phan, Carol A. Shivley and Irving Moy.

The overall format of this book is quite easy to pick up and dive right into. Many other works on immigration during the Civil War become bogged down in details to the point that the actual combat narrative of these people does not come into the text more than halfway through the book. But here, the work is sectionalized and easy to read just tidbits of people you may have heard nothing about before. Because of this, the reading is fast and keeps you interested. The many contributors have put in a labor of love to not only tell you about these people, but inform you about the culture which was prevalent during the time of the Civil War when it came to the Asian Americans who arrived in the country. Some of the stories of these men might leave you shocked to learn the way in which the United States Government treated Asians and Pacific Islanders during the reconstruction period. But overall, it is hard not to be inspired by the acts of these men during the heat of combat.

I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the subject of immigration during the American Civil War. Very rarely do we hear about eastern immigration during the nineteenth century, but now with this book from the National Parks, that void has been filled. The overall format of the book makes it an easy but informative read and the presentation of the book is of the highest quality. With high resolution pictures and a glossy finish, this book definitely shows the great care in which it was produced. When asked about a good source for any book on immigration, this will be on the top of my list for a suggestion. A fine work that all who participated should be proud of.

The only thing better than the graphics is the content. This book is written for a wide audience but is based on a decade of scholarship and archival research by a team of the leading scholars in this field including Ruthanne McCunn (Chinese in the war) and Justin Vance (Hawaii and Hawaiians in the war). Page turn after page turn is fascinating and jaw dropping as the American Civil War meets World History.

Captive audience - good in most parts but could use some revision.

This book presents material that is difficult to find, however there are a handful of things that bring it down to 3 stars. There are illustrations that take up quite a number of pages and some of them have text that is difficult to read because of the illustration and text colors lacking significant contrast, material in the beginning of the book that has me scratching my head wondering why it is there, and one page where the text ends before the end of the sentence. If a revision comes out tying the introduction better into the subject matter, improving the contrast issues, and finishing the missing sentence it would be a 4 star book.

addiction you may not even be aware of. To be frank I never considered that I may have become an Internet addict and I was amazed to realize
how much of my precious time I was on Internet instead of creating projects that are much more interesting for myself and for others.

Excellent advice and program to help with dysfunctional money issues

Most of this book really resonated with me. I especially enjoyed the authors' stories of their past financial challenges and how they overcame them. The first part of the book explains different types of dysfunctional relationships with money (The Compulsive Spender, The Big Deal Chaser, The Poverty Addict, The Cash Co-Dependent, etc.) and the roots behind the behaviors. The second half of the book is based on a 90-day program utilizing techniques and specific steps to change the negative programming we have around money. It is definitely worth reading and working the program. It really has helped me in a fairly short time period.

Skip ahead to the 90 days section if you have self esteem.

Too many boo hoo stories of people in debt that are not my situation. Once I got to the actual 90 days portion, things were a little better. I could still do without all the write your hopes and dreams down and focus on how to get out of debt and stay out. The last portion of the book was much more helpful on taming bad habits. The beginning of the book is clearly made for low self-esteem boosting. I just needed better buying practices and checks and balance systems to keep me out of debt. Thanks.

The story of the Warsaw ghetto is one of the most tragic episodes in the Second World War. Using a so-called "threat of typhus" as their "scientific" justification for quarantine, the Nazis crammed almost a half million Jews into a small quarter of the city, depriving them of food, clean water, adequate sanitation, and medical supplies. For three years, from 1940 to 1943, the ghetto inhabitants were packed seven or more to a room, struggling incessantly against starvation, disease, and death. Of the 400,000 Jews in Warsaw before the war, only a few thousand survived.
In Courage Under Siege, Charles Roland, a physician and historian, provides the first history of the medical disaster that took place in the Warsaw ghetto, offering a compassionate account of the tragic struggle for life and, in particular, of the heroic efforts of the ghetto's doctors, nurses, and social organizations who provided relief in the face of overwhelming odds. He portrays the nightmarish conditions of the hospitals where operations continued without electricity, gas, running water or sewage systems, where corpses lined the corridors, and where beds contained as many as three patients at a time. He describes the ingenuity and humanity of doctors and hospital workers who continued to provide medical services while they themselves were starving and facing the same destiny as the rest of the ghetto inhabitants. Heart-wrenching, inspirational stories of these dedicated medical workers shine brightly in this otherwise bleak landscape. For instance, Roland describes the creation of a clandestine medical school, "a beautiful case of passive resistance," which gave as many as 500 students a medical education and a semblance of normal living--though only a few survived to continue their training. And Roland also tells of a major scientific study of hunger conducted by ghetto physicians capitalizing on the one thing they had in abundance--starvation. This was research of the purest kind, intended to advance human knowledge, since these doctors had no illusions that the research would help them or their patients survive.
Drawing on an impressive array of research materials as well as interviews with surviving medical workers, Roland draws a stunning portrait of how the medical community of the Warsaw ghetto resisted the ravages of disease and starvation inflicted by the Nazis. This volume is a lasting testimony to their courage and to the power of the human spirit in the face of horror and adversity.

Roland (history of medicine, McMaster Univ., Ontario) has written "the story of the ghetto in Warsaw . . . as medical history," told by the handful of survivors who served there in a medical capacity. From the establishment of the ghetto in November 1940 to its demise in May 1943, the Jewish medical community and social organizations struggled against the overwhelming challenges of starvation and mortal disease, especially typhus and tuberculosis. Roland records this hopeless history with meticulous care and reserve. Two remarkable episodes in this nightmare were the attempt to run a medical school for 15 months and a scientific study of starvation carried out by the Jewish medical profession. This excellent medical and social history of a unique community under extreme duress is based firmly on interviews with survivors, memoirs and diaries, and many secondary works in English. The documentation and scholarship are excellent. Highly recommended for academic and public libraries.

Ghetto Superstar!

This book contains great detailed information on the lives and times of the Jews during the Holocaust. I would recommended it to anyone doing research, or to any one who want to know about the resistance effort or the type of life that was experienced under the Nazi party. Contains excellent pictures as well.
