Sifu Whitrod's book, "Close in Fighting Skills of Chow Gar Southern Mantis Kung Fu" is one of the few out there written on Southern Mantis and he has provided numerous insights into the system. It is not a how to book, but a very detailed overview of the system and many of its principles, concepts and training methods. It is illustrated but like I said it is not a how to so don't expect a hundred self techniques. I however found this book much more valuable than the typical how to and I feel most will feel the same as the read and delve in deeper with each repeated reading. Recommend this book to all, especially to southern short hand stylists(if I lost you with that you most likely got here by accident.) such as obviously all Southern Praying Mantis, Southern Taizu, Pak Mei, Wuzuquan and Wing Chun. Similarities and ideas are abundant in reading this. Now my only complaint, sellers is overcharging, google this book, even ordering from Sifu Whitrod's school site in England is cheaper with shipping than this seller. It is available on other US Sites for about a third the price.

Excellent book

The book is an outstanding contribution to martial arts knowledge on a rare art form. International books seller is ridiculously over priced on there offering. The book is still available from the authors website and from Shen Martial Arts for about 50 to 60 bucks. Thats less than a third of what international books is offering a used copy for. I recomend the book very highly. Don't expect to learn the art from the book but it will give you a great high level overview of what the art is all about and the basic concepts. If your taking lessons with a certified Chow Gar instructor it will help explain some of the concepts a bit more in depth.

The silence that DOES speak

When I finished Obasan, I felt blown away. This is not just a great piece of Japanese Canadian literature, this is a great book, period. The Internment of Japanese American/Canadian citizens during World War II is a subject that is widely unknown, and a topic that few novelists have been able to capture with as much skill as Kogawa.
"Obasan" weaves a seamless tale that stretches between generations and spans continents and decades with an almost dreamlike quality. As other reviewers have commented (lamented?) about, there are many dream sequences, all of which have significance as the story is unveiled. The dreams, the "silence that cannot speak," the love that is voiceless and yet vivid, the grief that cries out loudly and yet unheard ... the power of Kogawa's writing lies in being able to interpret and experience this imagery, and feel the pain of the internment as if doing so first hand.
I was surprised to see the number of negative reviews this book has received here ... I feel compelled to include my voice with those who thoroughly recommend this book. "Obasan" is the best novel on the internment I have yet to come across, and certainly among the most powerful books I have read. Although Kogawa writes of a silence that does not speak, she breaks the silence beautifully with "Obasan," revealing a history that many do not know, and many do not talk about. This is a story that must be remembered and retold ... so history does not repeat itself.

Obasan, a must-read book

When I first purchased Obasan, I was unsure of how much I would enjoy the book. Fortunately, it turned out to be one of the best books I have ever read. In the novel, Joy Kogawa deals with the Canadian Japanese internment camps during World War II. She does a masterful job of using flashbacks to tell the story through the eyes of a young girl who is forced to move with her family to different camps and farms to survive during the war. Kogawa uses many autobiographical elements in the novel to help tell this magnificent story. Her descriptive language is beautiful and allows the story to flow along at an easy pace. She also utilizes many similes and metaphors to help the reader see what she sees a little better. Although there are not many symbols in the novel, the ones that Kogawa uses are utterly important to the story. Kogawa mainly focuses on themes of prejudice and silence, in which all the characters embody one or the other. The change in setting, both place and time, can be confusing at first, but once the reader catches on, they will become engrossed in the deep plotline. And although the story is written about Japanese Canadians and their struggle to make it during World War II, Obasan is definitely aimed at the general American audience, so that hopefully they will be able to see the light that Joy Kogawa shines on the entire situation. After reading the novel, I can definitely say that I recommend it to any and everyone out there that is interested in the history of the Japanese internment camps and World War II. And even if you aren't it is still a very well put together book that will pull you into its plot and not let you go. This novel is a definite must read for everyone.

deeply moving and elegantly written

I picked "Obasan" from the shelf with new books in the library, motivated by the title and author's name, driven by my fascination with everything Japanese. And, as it came out, I this is exactly what is criticized in the book. Joy Kogawa is Canadian, of the family living in Canada for generations. She is a poet, which has a beautiful influence on her prose, which is very precise whenever she wants it to be, and, on the other hand, full of unique similes and metaphors. The language changes depending on the perspective - the narrator is Naomi Nakane, a 35 year old teacher, who, confronted with the past, goes back to her childhood memories, reads letters from family and officials, and at present takes care of her Uncle's funeral arrangements. The book is not very big, yet it is good to take time to read it, to take it in.

Whereas the language is a very strong asset of this novel, the story was extremely moving for me too. Maybe it is only European ignorance- I knew nothing about persecutions and internalization of Canadian citizens of Japanese origin during World War II. I was, shortly speaking, shocked, because I regarded Canada as one of the most liberal countries, caring for the inhabitants. It seems that no nation has an unstained past...

It is great that books like "Obasan" are written, because the general unawareness of this problem, especially when Holocaust and Gulags are widely recognized (and there were times when nobody believed in concentration camps in Poland or work camps in Siberia), is absolutely unacceptable.

The suffering of one Japanese family, deprived of their belongings, fighting for humane treatment and trying to keep some dignity while treated with disrespect and separated, seen mostly by innocent child's eyes, is a powerful evocation. The issues of racism, different perception of people because of their appearance and roots, children's cruelty, are also discussed.

A great and successful effort. I am going to read the second part,"Itsuka", as soon as I can lay my hands on it.

Since the Glorious Guhyagarbha lays out this profound view in great detail, it is known as the "King of All Tantras," the "peak of all yanas," the "source of all doctrinal schools," and the "universal explanation of all scriptures." It is the "final intention, thought, and realization of all buddhas," the "ultimate result of all yanas," the "great passage of all the Victorious Ones of the three times," and the "supreme highway of all yogis and yoginis." Together, these are known as the "Eight Greatnesses" of this tantra. Along the course of history, many great masters and practitioners have achieved full realization by engaging in the Secret Essence teachings. Today we are connecting with this very same path by studying, contemplating, and meditating on the nugget essence of the Dharma through these instructions. We are finally discovering the profound and mysterious secret that has been hidden from us for such a long time: the guhya garbha, or "secret essence," of the inherent nature of reality.

A Monumental Achievement is this Splendid Book which Opens the Gate to Wisdom

The Khenpos as teachers have created a monumental legacy to bring the King of All the Tantras to the West. They have opened the Gate of Vajrayana Buddhism for us and we just have to step into the pages of this book and then practice and actualize their precious teachings. The history of the Guhyagarbha Tantra as well as Tantra in general is presented. The outer and inner tantras are discussed. Particularly interesting are the teachings on the Bardo or Afterlife. Everyone wants to know what happens when we die and here, in this book, step by step explanations are discussed. The Zitro practices of the Peaceful and Wrathful Deities which appear after death are also fascinating topics. My favorite teaching is the culminating chapter towards the end of the book which guides students to practice this tantra which is also known as The Secret Magical Net of Illusion. This precious book by the Khenpos gives us the backround history, view, path and the ultimate way to enter the gate and pass through this samsara net of illusion. It is a monumental achievement in Vajrayana Buddhism and the Khenpos' gift of Dharma to the West. Pema Gadron

THE GREAT GUYAGARBHA, KING OF ALL TANTRAS! HO!!!

The Great Guyagarbha Tantra is the first direct teaching (first oral and then on paper) that directly teaches, DEFINES, and brings us that much closer to realizing what we actually are, and what all reality actually is. It is considered fundamental by ALL MASTERS OF ALL SCHOOLS of VAJRAYANA BUDDISM. To use the term “revelation” in its effect on me, is not over-stating or dramatic because its purpose is just that; to reveal to us the True-Nature that is the only absolute condition for everything. Now how on Earth can a teacher or teachers convey that?! Well, that’s where masters come into the picture. The authors of these Teachings on the Great Guyagarbha Tantra, are the Venerable Khenchen Palden Sherab Rinpoche and Khenpo Tsewang Dongyal Rinpoche. They speak in a way that is completely authentic to the teachings yet so beautiful, so simple, so straight forward. (LOL! I am almost in tears with appreciation at this very moment!) Yet also, because Khenpo Tsewang speaks English so beautifully, it is HE who is speaking to us in his own voice and at the same time translating Khenchen’s (Khenpo’s brother) native Tibetan in a perfect and enlightening manner. I know this because I have been fortunate to recieved their teachings in person. Alas, (and TRULY as equally important to mention here), is the editing. I mean, this is a book, but it sounds like I am describing an audio recording! That, my friends, is where the magic of the current editing and translation team of Pema Samye Ling (PSL) come into the picture. (dang…I’m about to get teary again!…Abide, abide…ok, I’m cool.) Anyway, originally these teachings consisted of two summer sessions for groups of students on retreat. The teachings were recorded culminating into countless hours of audio. That’s when this team of EDITING-ARTISTS created a seamless stream that feels as if you are ACTUALLY THERE. Really, this was my experience the first time I read it. I cannot even begin to get into the actual teachings here. They are too vast and perfect for a review but again I will say that it is THE fundamental teaching revealing to us the True-Nature of Phenomena exactly As-It-Is. It is currently my own daily study and will continue to be so indefinitely. I should also mention that each teaching, within this Teaching, is an entire meditation unto itself. So, there are probably a hundred (if not hundreds) of meditations in here. Any person along the Path should BUY THIS BOOK, absorb it, and allow it to naturally progress your realization.

The other two reviews existing at this time are exellent and I will just add my confirmation. Two weeks ago I finished another book from the same authors (Key to Opening the wisdom Door of Anuyoga). That book was a real blessing for me and I keep it and the authors in the highest esteem. I am delighted to have the opportunity to spend more time with them. It is REAL Quality Time! Having said that, I would like to add, that the level of these teaching is comparable to e.g. Albert Einstein's " Theory of Relativity" , so you would have to know a little bit about physics and mathematics already otherways the blessing will not materialize. To know in that context means embodied experience and knowledge, not just intellectual knowledge! As a matter of fact the loosing of the net of reference of the intellect is the whole point!

About the Author
Seth Benardete is professor of classics at New York University. Among his many books are The Argument of the Action and Plato's Laws: The Discovery of Being, both published by the University of Chicago Press.

Nef Distinguished Service Professor in the Committee on Social Thought at the University of Chicago and the author of several books, including The Closing of the American Mind and Shakespeare on Love and Friendship, the latter published by the University of Chicago Press.

The Ladder of love

In this review I will compare 5 translations of Plato's Symposium:
1. Alexander Nehamas & Paul Woodruff (Hackett Pub Co, 1989).
2. Benardete (University of Chicago Press, 2001).
3. R.E. Allen (Yale University Press, 1993).
4. Shelley's Translation (St Augustine Press, 2002)
5. Sharon (Focus Publishing/R.Pullins Co, 1997)

I have given all translations 5 stars for their own unique perspectives. Each of these editions has its own strengths and weaknesses, and because of this, none of this edition is complete in itself. Inevitably, if you are serious in undertaking this work, you need to pick up more than one edition. I will give a recommendation on which one to use, at the end of this review.

Symposium consists of a series of speeches on love (Eros), culminating in Socrates' and then Alcibiades'. What I am looking for is, first, ease of understanding the central concept of the book, this is obtained through different types of translations. My bias is toward a translation that is fluid, natural, and conveys the concept in a straight forward way. Second, I am also looking for helpful insights and philosophical explanations of some key thoughts. You get this from the quality of commentary/notes as part of the book.

Both Sharon's and Nehamas' editions are similar in their lucid, straightforward, and current translations. I find that these 2 editions to be the best and easiest in understanding the text. On the translation side, I give these 5 stars. However, the commentaries in both editions are basic, and unsatisfying in my mind. For this, I give 4 stars.

Benardete's edition has a superb commentaries both written by him and another (which is the gem here) written by Allan Bloom. You may or may not like Bloom's style, but he does give you a lot of background especially in ancient Greek pederasty culture, and valuable insights in each of the speeches. I give this a 5 star. I will recommend buying this book just for those 2 commentaries. On the translation itself, however, I am not a fan of Benardete's style. I have commented this in other reviews for his other translations, especially the "Sophist". For some reason, I find it more complex, long winded, and harder to understand. For this I give this edition translation 4 stars only.

Allen's edition is superb for both translation and commentaries; this is a 5 star book for me.

Finally, on Shelley's translation: this is a unique edition for a couple of reasons. It is a translation of a masterpiece work, by a master in literature himself, Percy Shelley. So, you are reading not only Plato's works, but also a work by one of the most influential literary figure in the English world. Secondly, there is an extensive commentary by David O'Connor, not only on the Symposium, but also on Shelley's process and motivation of doing the translation. A superb edition.

My final recommendation: pick up either Sharon or Nehamas' book (personally I prefer Sharon's, it is beautifully done) for the translation, and then pick up Stanley Rosen's "Plato's Symposium" for the commentary (I have a separate review for this superb book). However, if you must read 1 and only 1 book, I would stay with Allen's.

Fantastic!

The great Seth Benardete has provided an accurate and intriguing translation of this classic masterpiece. The "Ladder of Love" by Bloom is also included, and is as equally important to a fuller understanding of the symposium as a good translation is.
*Note: the ladder of love is a chapter from Bloom's Love and Friendship, so be aware that if you already have this you are mainly buying Benardete's translation. On that note, it is one of the best translations around.

Venkatraman is able to eloquently describe how companies can think of digital transformations and approach the endeavor of participating or orchestrating ecosystems around their products, platforms, services and solutions. The Digital Matrix framework is a spot-on perspective on how to decide the strategy a company should take around technology impact and digital discovery. I believe these topics will continue to gather relevance as technology capabilities and innovations percolate in all business areas and get weaved into traditional products during the next decade.

A must read for any Product manager

I'm generally not a big reader of these types of books, however this book was recommended to me by someone I trust. Thank goodness the insight into the digital society married to the product world is fantastic. I have had the pleasure to participate in several of Professor Venkatraman's lectures and workshops and have seen his deep passion for this topic. It is wonderful that he can share it with the rest of the world through the Digital Matrix.

This book transcends culture and geography. I highly recommend the read.

This book is one of clearest expositions of what it takes for a firm to compete in the new digital economy. Full of very relevant examples, it highlights in very specific ways how industrial age firms can avail of new opportunities created by digitization, and what these firms should do to tailor their strategies for growth and competitive advantage. I would say that this book is a must read for any one engaged in business strategy and cognizant of the growing impact of digitization in the business world.

About the Author
Bruce Saddler, PhD, is Associate Professor in the Division of Special Education at the University at Albany, State University of New York. A former K-12 special education teacher and teacher of the year, he conducts research on writing and the remediation of writing difficulties.
